You sure can, but you will need a little bit of soft modding to do this.
My blue sig says it all.....

I am reluctant to softmod anything after following Doggeggs 4.2 softmod guide to a T and ending up with a brick.

I just want to attach a modchip to the DVD drive cable, no soldering, no tampering.

Looks like im out of luck, is there at least anything on the horizon yet that can tackle this?

Good for you. I followed it with no problems untill I installed Preloader. It never rebooted my machine and then bricked it.

I cant reccomend anyone try the 4.2 update who has a black Wii.

After looking around I have found that I can buy a full new DVD drive forthe Wii for 30.

My question is, can I replace the whole drive without leaving any perminant marks or damage, and preserve the warranty? (obviously I would need to put the original drive back in)

How easy is it to just swap the entire drive?

Look at the stickeys and Giudes, there are some videos that will show you how.

    WiiDoggii,

    Re:...
"You have to take the Wii a part and replace the drive.
    OR
    Use an USB DVD.
    OR
    Use a USB HDD."

Since the CDR8164B can read Wii Discs.
Can I install it into a USB enclosure and use it to play Wii backups??

If not, what do ou mean by :"Use a USB DVD"

    Thanks in advance.

I have an older Wii that won't read back-ups anymore. I want to buy a new dvd drive for the Wii what model should I buy? Is a D2C fine? I have a usb loader and it works great. I just want the back-up disks to work also.
