I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my cousin's wii..

I'm not sure what modchip he has but this is what I get on serial tracker:
Your Drive Chip is most likely GC2-DMS.
Your Drive Pins are most likely not cut.

The thing is that I can play almost all backup games, but mario kart and smash bros... Obviously it would nice if it could play them, but when we launch any of those two, all we get is a black screen... The title does come up on the Disc Channel, but right after you launch it, that's it... black screen... The game's are good, 'cause the work on my wii (Argon)... So, it has to do something with the modchip I guess.

So should I update the Wii? The modchip? Wii's or modchip's firmware? If so... how would I update the modchip's firmware?

it will be a wiikey or a clone of it ... then just use in that order

IF the WII is is a North american ntsc wii then...ok

yup follow modderman's advice...as soon as u try to update with the 1.9s disc you will see the progress bar..if you get "test connection error failed" then you dont have a wiikey or probably have a clone.
