Which version of the firmware are you operating under?
Current version is 3.2 if you can get a game with that on it (SSBB has it i think) for your region then you should be fine.
If you have a Wifi connection i find it best to let it update by download. Makes sure your always up to date. (Being semibricked will have taken out whatever connection you had, so you'll need to do the update via disc.)
Always use a brick blocker on everygame your unsure about not being from your region. (Just google for Brickblocker - you'll find it.)
Occasionally there is an exception to this rule and there is a nifty little trick you can do - the 15% trick, I did it with SSBB, rather nervously. You let the system start to update but turn off (remove the power lead) at 15%.
There's talk of a repair disc floating around not sure how accurate it is though. Nintendo apparently fixed people's machines that were bricked after Super Mario Galaxy came out - it's risky but you could always try this route. However trying to update via a disc with a known update for your region on it is probably your best bet!
After SMG bricked so many Wii's automatically part of me believes that the reason the Mario Kart channel was included to be accessed through the disc as well as installing it to your system was to prevent bricking from occuring.
Anyway good look with it all and if i see the repair disc knocking around i'll send a link / hint where you can get it.
thanks alot man
ill keep my eyes open
and im going to try SSBB to see if that will update back to normal
