Advice for a new Wii owner? (the dilemma I'm trying to sort out..)

So I'd like to purchase a Wii for myself and my girlfriend for X-mas, but I've been reading various pieces of information and it sounds like the current solderless chips don't work on the new Wiis. In light of this, I was thinking about maybe getting a pre-modded Wii (from here) with a Wasabi DX, but the WODE has me really interested.

My only concern with the WODE however is that: 1) I've never opened up a Wii and installed a chip before, so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to doing it myself, which brings me to 2) Due to the fact that there aren't any vids up on how to install this (since it's not out yet), this makes me uneasy, and 3) While the WODE looks awesome, it's still technically untested and there's still a - even if 1% - chance that there are headaches for the time being.

I've given thought to just buying the pre-modded Wii anyway and if and when the WODE is released and there is certainty about its awesomeness (and perhaps a game loader that's on-screen and not on the LCD), but doing this I'm going to end up spending more to both have the Wii pre-modded (since, again, I've heard that there's issues with the new ones) and possibly later shelling out the extra cash for a WODE.

Right now I am going back and forth between buying the new Wii and waiting for the WODE and taking my chances with that, or just buying the pre-modded system because what it all comes down to is I want a workable, modded Wii come X-mas.

Since I can not come to a straight conclusion in my head, I figured it would be best to inquire for help, because I'm driving myself crazy with this >_<.

What i would do is get a wii from a main retailer (toys-r-us : Bestbuy : ECT)

then use this guide to SOFTMOD the wii and you should be all good...

    thanks

Chips are good, but I personally have found much more enjoyment from the softmodding I have done. I would also recommend to follow one of the two guides below. Then set your wii to boot into usbloader gx, get a decent hd and your set- you'll never have to get off the couch to change games and the gui looks great.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. Truth be told, doing anything with firmware makes me real nervous due to the bricking risk (even if it's 1%). But at the same time, it sounds convenient, and cheap. Any suggestions to ease my fears?

You should do some more reading to familiarize yourself and develop your comfort level. Have a look at the two guides below, both are to softmod your wii depending on your system menu.

Thanks for the gentle support, mauifrog

Seems easier and less scarier than I had thought. Though I had a few questions (which maybe I should throw onto another thread in a different forum?)

    1. What's the chance of bricking just from the first step of install? Assuming that I had the correct data in place, is it anything short of a freak power-outage mid-install that would do it?
    2. What's an ios?
    3. What's a NAND?
    4. What's a cios?

The process seems rather straightforward, and is written with caution in mind, but is still rather confusing at first glance since I'm not following it along with a wii. I think maybe I should look at some YouTube vids of this same process. I just like making sense of it all beforehand; just how my mind works.

Thanks for the help and input, guys! After reading through some info and watching some video tutorials, my fears a pretty much gone. It seems much easier than I originally expected and the risk is much lower than I originally expected as well.
