What Wii Mod Chip do I have?
A friend bought my Wii, already chipped, in Hong Kong late last year. Now I cant play SSBB and I have no idea which modchip I have installed. I don't wat to open up my Wii, nullifying its warrentee and maybe breaking it. Can anyone tell me how I can know or find out what chip I have? Are there any software discs I can try to boot with to know or are there any tell tale signs for me to know?
If your wii is already chipped as you stated, then it has already been opened up before. So how is opening it up again going to void your warrentee, it's already been opened to mod it. Just open it up again and look and see....
If I open up my wii, what should I be careful of or what hints can you give me not to mess up anything in my wii. Also how would I know where to look for the chip and how to know what chip it is? Thanks, I'm a total noob on this.
The main thing would be the tools.. youll need a really small phillips head, a small phillips head and the Tri Wing Screw Driver. You can buy the tri wing screw driver on ebay or modchip stores online. Youtube search wii teardown or something of that nature and you can see how one comes apart. Aside from the tools, the Wii is the easiest console to get access to where the chip is.
I burned a copy of the Wiikey update 9g. It loaded up, but didn't update. (it prompt for pressing of A button to start update, but when I press A, nothing happens.) SO I guess that means that I dont have a wiikey chip, right?
Do you need to upgrade other chips as well, for playing BRAWL? Or do you think it could be another problem then?
If it was chipped in Hong Kong it most probably has a WiiKey clone or cheap chip installed.
Really the only way to know for sure is to open the console.. Check you tube for a detailed video of how to take apart your Wii.

I opened mine for the 1st time a couple days ago and have done it a few times since: Use Google to search for taking apart a wii, there are a bunch out there with pictures of the process and what screws to take out.
MAKE SURE AND PRINT OUT THE PICTURES FROM WHATEVER GUIDE YOU USE AND WHEN YOU TAKE A SCREW OUT USE SCOTCH TAPE AND TAPE IT ON THE PICTURE WHERE IT CAME FROM!!
I've read people taking there's apart and when putting back together had no idea which screws to use for which holes. The above mentioned makes it much easier for putting back together.

Once equipped with the right screwdrivers the Wii is the most effortless console to open, IMO.
