    It cost 85. I bought a D2C replacement drive (60)from here.

Replacement Wii DVD Drive D2C - UK STOCK - The Hanger

And fitted a drivekey solderless chip (25) from the same seller.
I did it myself, very easy to do but a triwing screwdriver is a must.
As for the firmware? I'm not sure what version was installed from new because I updated it when I first turned the Wii on. It is now running 4.1E.

Just modded black wii for usb loader with no problems at all using 3.1-4.1 guide. Seems to be a lot cheaper bet than changing the components in the wii.

Just curious. Does NSMB run on your Wii using Disc channel?

    Hello limited edition wii owners,
Question for you: would MPlayer DVD playback work on a limited edition black wii..that is could I please play divx movies burnt on verbatim dvds (rws, rs)...is the new drive limitation only about game backups (what kind of discs are original games - could I buy such blanks and burn my movies on those),plaese?

Thumbs up Black Wii. 1st Time. Brilliant.

    Hi guys,
Just done my 1st mod of my sons new black wii. I went for the external hard drive method. With the Wii Flow mod. No problems.
My son done most of the job in no time. Very easy to follow.

    Cheers

My black wii also came with 4.1e as standard and i left is as that and done the 3.1-4.1 softmod.
Had to do a few other things to play some guitar hero games but nothing major.
Using the usb loader with an external partitioned seagate 500gb hdd. 1 half for my music and films and the other for wii games etc.

I really dont see the need to spend all that money on expensive older drives to play backups when everything is tidy and away in the hdd. It looks neater when you can see all the game covers etc in the loader.

    USB FTW!!!

Or just buy a nice looking slim external DVD drive the same color as you wii if you really want to use DVD's this way you can use your DVD's at 8x

    Who did it? Link?
    Never Update online
Updating online will remove all softmods, bootmii included, and could brick your wii.
Don't do this unless you're instructed to do so by a forum mod.
I did the above (Silly me)
