    Whoops, Wrong Wii?!

    Hi Guys (n girls),
Thanks for all previous help, I had another thread going but this is a different topic so I started this one.

Problem: I bought a modchip with a solderless clip, and there is no location on the dvd drive to attach it to (the second black square next to the big one, im not sure what they are called). My research obviously wasn't extensive enough to realise that some boards had this and some did not. What is my best option:

1)send back the chip and ask for a differnt one

    or

2)take back the wii and by a different one (possibly a newer one), in the hopes that the new one would have this area to attach the clip.

My wii was an LU387******, with 3.4 menu. Would a newer wii have a spot for the clip?

    Thank you again!
Wiiwise (or unwise in this case)

I think I put this in the wrong forum thread, can a moderator move it if so? (thank you)

I get this type of chip that suitable [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

If I'm right then you have a big blob of epoxy resin over your drivechip. Something like this?

So your choices actually include another..remove the modchip from it's key and solder on to the drivechip after removing some of the epoxy that's covering the necessary pins on the IC. Newer Wiis tend to have this epoxy as a countermeasure against modchips. That's why drivechip modchips came out, they allow you to plug the ribbons onto the chip and bypass the security but are limited to the 3x DVD speed and may have some video stuttering.

There is no epoxy resin and there is no drivechip, just a big space where they both should be. The serial number is in the range of LU3700xxxxx and above, but there is no drivechip. I've seen pictures of this on the forum but cant find them again, the chip had to be installed using wires i think.

Yes! Exactly like that. Would it be worth while to try and get another system, again I have the D2Pro9 Chip (that took 3 weeks to get through the mail), so sending it back and getting another one will surely take a long time, where as futureshop is right down the street (got my wii at walmart).

You may just end up with the same type. I haven't followed the modchip scene though as I softmodded shortly after fitting my Wiikey2. I do know that a drivekey will sort you out though, or a variant along that theme (ribbon type connections)

Why not softmod your Wii while you wait, it's free. [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

its looking like softmod may be the best thing, ive got a few extra bucks so i might try another system.

does running games off a hard drive work at full speed (6x) with a usb loader? or does it have its issues like everything else?

Thanks for your all your help Tealc.

In fact it runs faster than 6x.

There are a few (literally few) games that don't work so well but normally if it's worth playing someone will find a fix.

The only problem with USB loading is that you have to keep up-to-date with things to a certain extent, like getting the latest cIOS and IOS when needed. A modchip is an install and generally forget thing. I'm happy USBing it though as you don't have to mjuck about with discs all the time.
