i managed to take apart my wii to look at my modchip.
after googling, i suspect my chip (see below) is a wiikey.
can anybody confirm about this?
also as my wii currently wont allow me to play cross regions,
does wiikey provide firmware upgrade for the chip itself?

Looks like a Wiikey, was my initial thought and was confirmed by comparing images on google.
Grab the configuration disc iso from Wiikey and that should allow you to modify any settings stored on the Wiikey itself. You'll find the disc images at the foot of this page. [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]
It'll also confirm if it is a Wiikey as it won't work on anything else

If I have helped you do remember to press the little thanks button.

thanks for the reply.
I "successfully" flashed the firmware to 1.9s downloaded from the link u provided. however, now my wii cant detect any wii discs at all, legal jap copies or backups (my console is Jap ver). However i can still load up the wiikey config disc as GC discs. So why and how to solve this?

You speak of flash and config as if they are the same. As I see it you have one disc to flash the firmware to 1.9s and another disc to actually edit the chip's settings. The config on my Wii looks a bit like the screen on the old commodore 64.
Oh and make sure the first disc you load after any changes to your Wiikey is the region your Wii is set to, it must use the disc to set it's region or something.

does it have to be a legal copy in my region? coz im pretty sure the discs i used were in the same region...
UPDATE: now my wii cant even read in the update disc, but it can STILL read in the config disc. like what?

Sounds quite dodgy to me. It is normally so simple to get these things working.
Has the chip always refused cross region? If so it does sound like a bad install, possibly made worse by updating firmware.

yea for some random reason its booting all the discs once again. It can read all the discs i could before the update. However it refuses to boot the euro and pal versions of wii fit (neither backups or a legal pal version my sister bought with the board), but im able to boot Sonic and Mario at the olympic games which i believe was ntsc (the one in english without multi 5).
speaking of the chip, i believe its more like a replica chip, since the chip's ID/marks noticeably grinded off, also the tech managed to solder the chip right on the m-f-ing board... f**king chinese techno (lol im a chinese myself).
so just to confirm a genuine wiikey can in fact boot all regions right?
maybe its time for wiikey2...
