    Latest Wii D3-2 Drive - Hardmodding options?

    Latest Wii D3-2 Drive - Hardmodding options?
    Last wk I bought a new wii & it apparently has the new D3-2 drive (LAH1172...).

    I'd like to be able to play backed up games on my new Wii & also like the sound of loading all games on a HDD. By sounds of it not all chips allow this, only chips with 'usb loaders' (correct me if I'm wrong). But I also hear talk of hardmodded (chip) & softmodded (software) wii's, I dont understand why the need for softmodding if it's hardmodded?

    Anyhow, from what I've read so far, my options (for hardmodding) are as follows:

    The latest D2Sun SunDisk Series 2009 apparently works with D3-2 drives & is 100% solderless (assuming this wont void 12mth warranty).

    and these ones soon to come out but dont know how much they'll cost nor all the details:

    * D2Sun SunDrive (supports up to 2000Gb USB HDD)
    08-12-2009 And we have confirmed the SunDisk can support the last genaration D3-2(nothing) & 3.5K firmware wii console! SunDisk is the perfect solution for the next generation Wii !

    * wii fusion/wiikey 3 (supports SD cards
    )
    [2009.09.09] The Wiikey Team is pleased to announce Wiikey Fusion, a revolutionary new modchip with SD card capabilities. The release date is planned for sometime during October. Further details will be announced as they become available. In the meantime, please check out the video!

    What can you recommend please?

    P.S. I hope I posted in the right place.

    WiiKey Fusion Announced:
    WiiKey Fusion Announced - Page 3

    "In the latest d3-2 drives that started appearing in Wiis in Europe and North America at the start of August 2009. If your DVD drive is a D3 version 2 it will not be able to play backups in disc format
    , but will be able to run ISOs from SD cards!"

    Looks like wii fusion is NOT suitable as wont play DVD backups - per post above. So one of the two D2Sun chips is looking more like the answer.

    The sundisk only works off of the memory size so it is only a little bit better than the wiikey fusion.

    Both are annoying in my mind. You would needa bunch of SD cards or continiously switch out back ups from the massive 8gig/16gig of the Sundisk.

    I am sure it is only a matter of time before an actual soldered chip comes out for it or something that allows discs to be played.

    I replaced drive with D2B and Wasabi DX, but newer games don't work, black screen and error #003 appears. Any ideas?

    I have a D3-2 too, and looks like I'll go with the SUNDriver. Just like Balaberda said, if you choose fusion or sundisk, you 'll have to constantly switch games from your sd card. Just buy SUNDriver and a 250GB HDD, that's enough.

    If you do have some more cash to spend, grab the WODE Juke box, Or wait for SUN-HD.

    I like the USB_HDD Mod. I do not have to get up off the couch.
    PLEASE SEARCH, READ, AND THINK BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.

    Thumbs up Options for d3-2

    • replace the dvd drive pcb and add drivekey or other
    • 1 of the 3 new gen mods ...wiikey fusion, sundriver, WODE
    • of which the WODE & Sundriver are proven products

    I also have a D3-2 drive and would like to swap out to a different model, then chip that one. If I did so, do I need to do anything else other than pull the drive and drop another in? Or is there a more involved process involving replacing boards?

    I ask this since I lack confidence in my soldering skills on boards.

    Thanks
