You just swap the whole drive. I swapped few, then soldered in wiikey2. The only problem was with wasabidx (read above).

Well, If you buy a drive, make sure that the drive board comes with it.
The only reason that I say this is, that some people will just sell you the drive without the board. Most people would take it for granted that the board is included, which it should be. Just watch out for the crooks...
PLEASE SEARCH, READ, AND THINK BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.

All good advice, I found a couple at good prices that make me question if it has a board on it.

    Thanks for the help.

So it's just the DX that had issues? Have you tried swapping the board ONLY and a WiiKey2 for example?

Anyone know about the D3? Will that require the drive+board, or just the board for modchips? I'd really like to know, since I don't want the DX due to no GC audio fix...and the possible problems above.

    Thanks for any info.

    I have a wii with D3 board.
I decided to swap just the board with an D2-C board and then install wiikey2.
But I don't know what was the problem. When I installed D2-C board instead of D3 board, wii didn't work. It turned on automaticaly, and tried to eject Dvdrom. When you put A DVDRom, it didn't take it in, no action
But I'm not sure, D2-C board may be out of order, or I was not abble to install it well.
are there anyone who tried to swap d3 board and d2 board?

i think you could just swap the board, you could buy a second hand faulty drive on ebay for £5.00 and swap the board over
