Depends what you want to do.
If you use primarily discs to run your games (rather than USB) then a modchip is advantageous. If you have other people around who might update your Wii either from disc or internet then a modchip is advantageous. if you think you might be installing lots of bad wad files then a modchip can help you recover from a brick.
Backup loaders are limited to 3x speed to you might see stuttering on video, this is overcome by USB loaders.
I'm glad I got mine but not sure if I'd buy another, if I bought a second Wii.

These posts quickly become a Coke vs Pepsi flamefest. Basically, if you are already softmodded and use a USB drive to load your backups, then you don't need a modchip. If you like choir boys, gerbils, and sing YMCA in the shower, then you need a modchip.

Oh crap, I hope I didn't start anything. Haha!
Oh geez i dont like choir boys, gerbils, and sing YMCA... im taking off my modchip right away !!! and softmod
but nah i think modchips are great less software issues or hassle with tryin to update firmware or other software to play XXX game so thats why i prefer a modchip Ive semi bricked my wii once with trying to do homebrew n Wiiware it gets complicated sometimes n different Wiis react differently your solution might not work the next wii with the same problem ... I do have a second Wii that I will chip with Drivekey in the near futures since its the easiest solderless plug n play ... well whatever u decide to do hope everything works out... Most importantly modding anything requires alot of research and reading so yeahh ... alright good luck !

A...I don't like Pepsi,Choir or Choirboys,Gerbils are a waste of fur and The YMCA was a joke when it came out....LOL...But as for the Modchip,,I happen to like mine and it works just fine>
I just find it easier to have the chip installed and not have to worry about bricking my Wii....I'm not that great with electronics,,,So the chip was the easiest and best way for "ME" to go....Can'y afford to wreck my Wii,,,no job means no new wii if "I" mess it up.
When i get better with the mods..then I will try softmodding mine..(have a few games on disc which won't work with chip)
I'm not knocking everyone that has softmodded there Wii.....if it works for them, then great all the power to them.
