Without actually cracking open the Wii here's what wiidrives.com says:
The console has model number RVL-001(USA), produced for Canada/Mexico/USA.
* There is a 80% chance the chipset is GC2-D2C2 (v2) and the drive has the new metal clip.
* And there is also a 20% chance the chipset is GC2-D2C (v1).
It's most likely that it's a GC2-D2C2 chipset because of the year and NTSC version, but not for sure.

I bought my chip solderless for a little more so I could have it on in no time. I use HP DVD+R 16x DVD's burning @ 4x under Alcohol 120% scrubbing with
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]1.3R2 and I have little to no problems with this procedure. Others would recommend you using Verbatim DVD-R but it's your decision, as long as it works.
There's also something called homebrew (softmod), which you should look into to see if it's right for you, though it requires (from my understanding) a little more time to set it up just right. I am still considering setting it up even though I have a mod chip because of its many great features.
