Is there an easy way to find out what generation wii model I have?
I just got my wii from circuitcity.com this Tuesday and I am curious to see if i have one of the newer versions of the system that are harder to mod.
Is there a way of finding this out without opening up the system (like checking a serial number or going through the software somehow?)
If i do have one of these newer ones, does anyone know of a place that can safely mod it for me in the nj/nyc area?
i dont think there is any way to tell from the serial, you have to open it up and look. i got my wii last weekend, on 7-21-07, on its an unmoddable d2c hopefully you have better luck than me...
ok its time to sound like a noob
Is there like a picture comparison to tell apart these diff versions from the inside.
Also, I found this guide online for what seems to be how to mod these newer versions.
WiiKey Install Guides :: Complete Guide for Wii D2C
Am i wrong with this?
This is what the D2C looks like:
It says 'D2C' on top of the chip.
There is currently NO way to mod the D2C. Some mod chip developers claim to be close to a new compatible chip but there is no current chip that works. If you have a D2C you have to either get another console or wait for a new mod chip.

There IS a way to mod the D2C it just isn't easy. The link posted by youlovetonyt does lay out quite well the process for modding a D2C. The GINORMOUS problem with modding those boards is the fact that people are dremeling plastic from the chips to expose leads. If you cut too far you WILL damage your Wii in a real bad way. Also the leads you are exposing are real close together, it would take a lot of skill to solder a wire to that without shorting pins.

the d2b is the chip with the legs cut that is difficult to mod, but possible. the d2c is currently unmoddable.
