    Help hacking hard modded Wii

Hi. I got a Wii recently and after doing some research it turns out the console has a modchip but I don't know which one does it have. It's a white Wii model RVL-001 with System Menu 4.2U. All of my Gamecube and most of my Wii backups work except for New Super Mario Bros Wii. The game loads alright, but it shows a disc load error every 5 minutes. I've read that an update could solve the problem but since I don't know the modchip I can't do it. There is a problem with the shop channel because it demands a system update to 4.3 and I heard that if you update a modchip Wii the update will brick it. I don't know much about Wii hacking so I ask for your help to mod my console.

    In short my goals are:
    1. Protect my Wii from bricking.
    2. Make it compatible with all game backups.
    3. Update the system without causing issues.
    4. Fix the problem with the shop channel and install the official Netflix and Youtube channels.
    5. Install the best USB backup loader available, and several emulators complete with forwarders.
    6. Accomplish all the above goals without bricking the console or losing the ability to load Gamecube backups.

It would be great if i could find out which modchip I have and upgrade it safely if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best bet would be to follow the softmod guide and load everything from usb. That will also give you the needed brick protection. The modchip is not an issue, and you may or may not actually have one. Only way to tell that I know of is to open the wii up. Some chips have a setup menu, try pressing eject 5 times or so, that loads the menu on wasabi dx at least. But I would forget about the chip and disc and softmod it.

Thanks for your reply. I thought that non-modchip Wiis aren't able to load Wii and GC backups region free from the disc channel and mine is, except of course from New Super Mario Wii. I do want to install a USB backup loader for my Wii backups but the compatibility of DIOS MIOS isn't perfect from what I have read. Updating to 4.3 seems to be the easiest solution for the shop channel problem and make the console compatible with all the current hacks and homebrew. Would the official 4.3 update from Nintendo brick my Wii if I have a modchip? Would the chip still work? And if that method isn't safe, is there any other way to update? Ah I forgot to mention that when I got the Wii there wasn't any kind of homebrew installed but I managed to install the homebrew channel with Bannerbomb.

The 4.3 update would not brick your wii because of the modchip. Can't say it would not brick your wii, but probably not. The chip should still work, but it will lose region free ability on 4.2+ wiis.

Yeah I know that my Wii won't be region free anymore but I think that can be fixed with Priiloader. So there is a risk of brick with the update. I just want to fix my shop channel and make my console compatible with all games and homebrew, what should i do?

I already told you what I thought you should do. Follow the Softmod Any Wii guide. That will give you everything you need and want.

I started following the Softmod Any Wii guide. I successfully installed the Homebrew Channel and Bootmii as IOS (couldn't do it as Boot 2) and I made a NAND backup. But now I have 2 Homebrew Channels: one says IOS 61 v22.29 and the other says IOS 58 v24.32. Should I remove one of them?

EDIT: Also, shouldn't Priiloader be installed before installing the wads? And I don't know if that cMIOS will interfere with my chip while reading GameCube backups.

The order our guide follows is wads first, then menu update to 4.1 (optional), then priiloader (since installing a new menu removes priiloader).

the IOS61 can be removed. You want HBC to be running under IOS58 since that's what gives USB 2.0 access to the system. Any others will be running at USB 1.0 speeds.

Thank you guys, everything works now. The only disc that doesn't load now is a backup copy of Just Dance 2014. It shows 002 error on Wii menu, doesn't even load the banner. Both NeoGamma and USB Loader GX failed to load the disc even with ios250 enabled. It works with my hard disk and the same settings on USB Loader.

Your mod looks good except for the fact that it's using 61 instead of 58 to run HBC.

You may want to reinstall it so that it is using 58. You may have to find the 1.1.2 installer and use it to uninstall HBC first, then use bannerbomb again to reinstall it.
