Is playing DVD-R backup Wii games ruin the Laser Lens?

I have Wii backup games that are in DVD-R format. I heard that running DVD's on the Wii will mess up the lens... Is that true?

Yes, using poor quality DVDs can ruin your lens on the DVD drive in time... it is always a good idea to use high quality dvds...however the wearing of the lens is a long process which can take a few years to show.... you will prob be using the next gen console by the time it wears out..

so the bottom line is that.. don't worry about it.. get good dvds when you can.... you will get less read errors also

This is also the case with faster burn speeds... the faster you burn the poorer quality of a burn it is, the harder the laser has to work to read the disc... it is like this with any laser reading disc based system.

Just as a little side note, the burned disc will slighty reduce the life of the laser, but I am guessing they will increase the amount of time you play the Wii, so all in all it is worth it.

so you're saying that the recommended 3x speed for burning wii games is actually to preserve the laser ?

yes that is what I am saying in a way.... higher burn speeds also distort the disc to a point where the wii might not be able to read it, period. The less stress we put on the laser, the better the game will run and the longer the lifespan of the laser will be... I personally recommend a 1x burn speed. It takes longer but hey, you only have to burn the game once and you waited long enough to download it!

hmmm maybe 1x is a bit to much of a good thing... i always go for 3x it's takes around 20 minutes to burn a game (including verify). On that note, do any of you guys verify the disc when it's done burning ?

Does it matter what software is used to burn the disc? I assume that any software that can burn images would work. Personally, I'm most comfortable with Nero. Please correct me if I'm wrong, or if different software would be better suited for Wii games.

For some reason, I can't burn games with Nero so I use Imageburn instead and at 2.4X. I am using a Plextor burner and always TDK discs since that is what I always seem to get at Costco.
