NOT TRUE
Actually newer discs suffer from lower speeds.
I use Verbatim 16x DVD-Rs, and an ASUS burner.
I tested 1x, 2x, 2.4x, 3x, 4x, and 6x speeds with IMGBURN, then read back the disc with DVDInfoPro and Nero DiscSpeed. These programs can check the quality of the burn.
You have to look for the quantity of PI, PO Errors and Jitter. With my combo (the drive+media), 4x speed had the best quality. If you really care about your burn quality, do these tests yourself with your favourite media. (you have to sacrfice some DVDs for the cause - you have to burn the same isos with all speeds)

It's not the speed of the write what tears the DVD of the Wii... It's just that backups itself damage the drive... So it doesn't matter what speed you use for it. Speed matters when talk is about the quality of the disc...
