I agree with that statement and I have proof to show that back-ups do tire out your disk drive no matter what (if you need to know, I burn my back-ups at 4x). My cousin and I both have Wiis and his disk drive started to die not long ago. His wasn't modded and he has had it since its release (about 3 years?).
My disk drive totally broke and couldn't play
any disks about two weeks ago (all is good I sent it in to Nintendo and they fixed it and got it back to me in 4 days and I didn't even lose any save data!

It cost me $100 though...

). I've only had my Wii about 1.75 years. It was modded only in mid-January this year.
Also, my cousin plays more then me daily so it can't be because I play more.
To conclude, back-ups will cause your Wii to break down quicker than regular disks. To be on the safe side, take out back-ups when not playing the game because the disk is always spinning. (I know it is on the Wii menu, not so sure about when you're playing VC games or you're on the HBC) The best way to protect the disk drive is to play your back-ups off a hard drive.
