to play game cube games on the wii do you have to have a game cube controler?

Yes, you have to have the controller and if you want to save you've got to have the memory card too. The ports to plug them in are on the top or left side of the console (depending on weather you've stood it up or not.)
Yes, you need gamecube controllers. There are 4 slots (just like the gamecube) and 2 slots for memory cards. There is a panel that covers up the slots when not in use. You can use the wireless wavebird controllers with it, too!
