    Black Friday Blue Wii

    Hey Folks,

I sincerely apologize if this has been discussed before. If so, would you please point me in that direction? I've searched but I haven't found anything, and since I'm BRAND NEW to all of this, I don't really know what to look for.

Okay so I'm finally gonna get a Wii, hopefully. Gonna head out this Black Friday after eating Thanksgiving dinner, instead of heading home I'm headed to Wally World for those Blue Wii's that are running for $100. That happens to be the Fiancee's favorite color so, looks like a win-win. I'm not new to homebrew and modding and what not, and so I was googling around to see if you could do the same sort of thing to the wii, and it looks like you can!

So here is my question: Does anyone know if there will be any hangups in soft modding this new (to the US) Wii? Anything I should lookout for? Anything that might make the case of dropping another $50 on the White one? (Not too concerned about GameCube backwards compatibility).

Also, on a related note. One of the things that would be awesome, is if I could rip my games to my home server and then play them off of that, instead of having to juggle discs (What I LOVE about Steam, et al, on the PC!). I am FIRMLY against piracy, so no worries there, I genuinely want to be able to rip my games to my server and be able to load them off of a network drive (that's on and available 24/7), and be able to just shove all my games in a closet after ripping them. Is there a homebrew app that does that? I've seen the ability to do so off of a USB hard drive but, that's not quite the same!

Thanks folks! And thanks for the patience with a Newbie like me!

    -John

The modding process is the same for any colored Wii. As of now unfortunately there is no way to run backups from a server.

Gotcha. Okay well thanks! And the no backups thing well, no big deal I guess! I just nabbed a 32GB SD card off of Woot so that'll hold the ones I use the most I'm sure :P

Hey one last question- I bought an SDHC card I've read conflicting info that SDHC cards work, and others that say they don't work. Which is it? Any reason why? I'll keep reading the guides on these forums, I think I've got a 2GB non HC card laying around somewhere anyway, but it got me thinking!

Edit: Read through more of the guides. Looks like that SDHC card won't work. No big deal! Got a 1GB SanDisk sitting on my desk I dug up... Looks like I'm all set! Probably softmod the thing before I do anything else with it, haha!

    Just ordered mine online

I just ordered one of these online and managed to avoid the black friday madness : ) My brother in law who works at WalMart said he could not even find a spot to park when his shift started at 10.

I understand that these consoles are horizontal only and lack the gamecube controller/memory ports. Is this the only thing that keeps them from playing gamecube games? Or is the firmware different enough that it does not allow playing at all?

the version is 4.3 and yes you can softmod it but these version have the new dvd drive that cant read backups, so you have to play them from a hdd.

Actually you can set it vertically if you want to. It has rubberized non-slip feet that work quite well and make it feel very solid and secure. It simply lacks the base the other Wii's have. (I set it horizontally anyway though, looks nicer that way in my opinion and it also sits right beneath my TV making it very space saving, as opposed to along side it if it were vertical.)

As far as GameCube, I haven't tried, however opening the Disc channel clearly shows a gamecube disc along side a Wii disc both spinning (when you open the channel without a disc in, for example), and all the gamecube options are there. GC Memory Card management, etc. So, if there was a way to, for example, use the Wii Classic Controller or a USB Controller like an XBOX 360 controller, and save games to an SD card, then there is really no reasonable reason why it couldn't play gamecube games.

Finally, I had no issues softmodding it. Just followed Mauifrogs Guide. I'd like to put games on an SD card but nobody seems to know how to do it. Close to 100 views on a thread I started on the subject and not a single answer :/

drewb0y, I highly doubt they would take away the ability to play GC games from the blue wii. All the blue wii is, is a normal wii that's a different color.

Read the posts above bro. There are differences. They have a new DVD drive that doesn't support backups (Though those Wii's have been around), it doesn't have the stand for being put vertically like the others (Although it can be put vertically on rubber feet), and most importantly in this case, it doesn't have the GameCube controller ports OR memory card slots. AFAIK you can't play GC games with anything BUT a GC controller, therefore it can't do it. So yeah, they are definitely different.
