Which External harddrive to use with softmodded Wii

Hi, I am total new in this. My Wii is softmodded and I have tried to play my Wii games from a External Harddrive with seperate AC adapter.
I do have a little USB Harddrive 120Gb, which only gets power from the USB wire - my Wii can`t find this USB drive.
So my Question: Can Wii only play with External Harddrives with seperate AC adapters ??

No, mine is USB powered. It probably just isn't compatible.

    hard drive compatibility list

If you did not follow a guide from this site for the original mod, you should. You can run it right over whatever you have already done.
