    2-d3

    Does this mean I can't play backups on my wii with this drive chip? My serial number is
    LU3963XXXXXX

    Also I am in the US

    Well, in case you have the 2-d3 drive (only way to figure out if you have it is to open it or try a few copied games), you will not be able to play back-ups from discs, but you can still play them from an external USB device. So no, it does not mean you can't play back-ups with your wii.

    The database said I dont have D3-2 though so what is wrong?

    I have neogamma R8 I think (I forgot which one that is) and I get the DVD Read error 1053.

    My LU400 USA version (which ain't far off the mark from your LU396) had D3-2 drive in it. Error 1053 has three causes: bad cIOS install, bad media, D3-2 drive. That database is statistics, not absolute facts.

    You can replace the optical drive (or rather the PCB/logic board attached to it) with an older model - they're drop-in replacements. You'll need one off Flea Bay and a Tri Wing Screwdriver (Ebay again). Glad to be of assistance and thread closed per your request.
