Soft Hack possible without SD Card Slot and partially working CD Drive

A friend was able to find a very cheap Wii on the net, and asked me for advise. It was being sold with a partly faulty DVD drive. I told him to jump on it, think I could get it to run games of a connected USB HDD. So, he went ahead and bought it.

The Wi works fine, all the channels work fine, games and the Interrnet channel work perfectly. It even reads DVDs, starts games, but within 5 mintues, get a message saying "An error has occured, please eject and read the manual".. or something along those lines.

So, I said, no problem, lets get the SD Card and install the USB channel.... put in my SD card, nope, wound't read it... opened up the Wii completely, got to the main board, and saw the SD card slot was badly damanged, pins bent, missing etc.

Not to be deterred, I took out an old USB SD card reader, de-soldered the SD Card slot, soldered it by wire to the motherboard... still no joy... wouldn't read the SD card either.

So, with no SD card, partly working DVD drive, is there ANY way whatsoever to ge tthis Wii to run games of HDD?.

Incidently, the s/ware version on it is 4.2E.

Or, is there a cost effective repair I can look into?.

    Thanks.

It's possible the damage caused to the slot was from a previous botched repair attempt.

When you soldered the slot onto the mobo I assume you ensured the existing pins did not touch each other or the casing of the existing slot? or did you just remove it?

Without the Homebrew Channel it's difficult to run code on a virgin 4.2 Wii and all installers for HBC do require a working SD slot, although after this it is acceptable to use an SD device. AFAIK this has not changed and you will still need the SD slot when running any exploit eg. Bannerbomb, Smash Stack, Indiana Pwns.

Have you tried a different SD card?

I was hoping with some kind of DNS redirecting, it MAY be possible to download a channel from a site... looks like, I'm gonna have to wait till someone comes up with a better solution.

As far as wiring is concerned, the Wii board has the following labelling (going from left to right) CD 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 9.

Not very sure how this relate to a slot, so, I soldered 9 to the left most pin on the SD card clot and worked my way to the right (see picture attached),

you reckon I may have gotten the pin allocation incorrect?.

Shouldn't be any more difficult than wiring from point to point.

The CD is Card detect and is something peculiar. I'm not sure about the anatomy of a Wii SD slot as I've never had reason to go poking about but that extra connection seems to be important. There must be some sort of switch inside the Wii slot that closes or opens a circuit on that CD line. Either that or it could be a ground for the whole shroud.

Well, it seems to me that the only options you have are to try and get the SD slot working again or to use a hardmod. You could of course buy another broken wii (maybe ask around for a bricked one?), which has a working SD slot and desolder it and solder it on this wii.
Awesome sig picture does not work
