Man, sometimes the older member are way to rough on people! i've done tons of stuff to my wii, including modding themes, and haven't bricked yet! I also read 4-5 threads about what i'm going to before I do something too! keep up the good work Ricx94!

    Themes

Thank you for the info. (I just read your reply now). I thought you had to convert the .app file to a .csm file. I had an interesting time trying (in vain) to do that...

I do have some brick protection. My Wii, being a newer model (the black one), came with 4.2. I could not install bootmii as a boot2 *sad tuba*, but I did successfully install priiloader. I can access the homebrew channel and bootmii from it. I have two registry backups: one before the softmod, and one after it. Each is backed up on at least two devices. In the event of a brick, is my Wii, at this point, as easy to save as one with bootmii installed as a boot2?

I saw all of the warnings about how themes, and ignored them for awhile, until I saw the darkwii/ black theme on YOUTUBE... now I really want it! If it's as easy as mentioned above to switch between the original theme and other themes once the files are put together, this could be very cool.

Just a few questions. Basically, I want to know how risky it is to proceed.
    - Are bricks caused by themes easily fixed with a safety system?
    - Are such bricks generally caused by human error or faulty software?
    - How easy is it to recover from these? From the discussions, it looks like it may be easy with multiple methods to recover.
    - Will installing a new theme remove priiloader?

If anyone replies, I'll try to respond within 24 hours.

You're the exeption rather than the rule. The majority of posts we see having to do with themes are like the one I linked where the guy bricked with that program.

VT- You can't recover from a full brick with priiloader so you have limited protection. Themes are altered system menus made by some person just like you which replaces your normal system menu. Every time you switch themes you risk bricking.

I have been playing around with making my own custom theses for the past few days. I have a wii that I was able to install bootmii as boot2 and I am very glad I do. I know first hand that having Priiloader is not enough. I have fully bricked my wii several times just trying to changed the size of the Health Screen and somewhere in the process Priiloader either was corrupted or removed as it did not work and I had to fall back to bootmii to launch Wadmanager to reinstall my SM. This is just a warning to you but as you know, this is a very risky game that you are playing.

Okay. You guys have scared me (and it's probably for the best). I was hoping themes may only cause semi-bricks that could be fixed with priiloader. The idea of priiloader not showing up when I need it most is pretty terrifying. I take intimate note of each of your warnings... I want the themes so badly, but I'm too terrified to continue.

Krafter - note that I am not trying to edit the themes, just install one that I saw work. Note also that I am not actually playing the risky game...yet, and I probably won't, now that you guys have terrified me to the point where my breathing deepens, my heart rate increases, and I sweat excessively (okay, maybe this is a bit of an exaggeration). I asked for your input because I wasn't sure if priiloader was enough protection, and now I know it's not.
P.S. I’ve hit you with a "thank you" button.

Junkmail - okay, so themes often do cause full bricks; even ones that I find online and don't edit (except for .csm conversions). Just out of curiosity, is the risk for installing a theme a second as risky as the first? Or if the theme installs once, would it be expected to install safely a second time?
P.S. Nice picture, where do you guys come up with all of these!? It’s very clever! My compliments.
P.S.S. I hit you with a “thank you” button.

To install bootmii as a boot2, don't you have an older firmware or downgrade to one? I assume one would have to sacrifice Wi-Fi play and compatibility with newer games. Oh well, maybe they'll come out with a new safety system for any 4.X firmware, maybe bootmii as a boot3? (if there's even such a thing as a boot3... probably not)

    Thank you both.

It'd be so funny if you brick though, messing with themes is so risky.

Actually, I will see you in the Bricked Issues forum, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon...
    Tealc - that was sick!

    sick! sick! sick!

    ...But very funny.

Tk- a safe alternative is to use a loader called wiiflow. It has tons of awesome safe loader themes and you can have priiloader boot straight to it. They're a whole lot cooler than system menu themes. Ithian has a guide on it.

yes vtwombat, putting a theme on your wii can brick your wii. having bootmii as boot2 is about the safest thing you can do to provent a brick if you do choose to mod your theme. luckly this site is fully of "how to"s on how to unbrick you wii in most cases! (thank you all you have taken the time to write any how on the site, i have used many of them). The thing a lot of older member seem to forget is the reason we mod our wiis to begin with. BECAUSE IT'S FUN! it's fun to find a way to do something to your wii that only a few people know how to do. it's fun to try and mod your wii in a way that makes it your own. its fun to hold your breath and cross your fingers when modding your wii because you don't know if it will work. it's fun to get that felling when whatever you are trying to do work and you didn't brick your wii. i understand that some members are just trying to save you from fully bricking your wii, again i thank them for their advice, but modding your wii can be fun as long as you take the proper safety measures (such as bootmii and priiloader) and you should be fine! [removed] and if not, new wii are pretty cheap compared to other systems and it won't ask for half your check every pay day either!
