    External USB DVD drive

Might be a daft question, but has anyone tried and external DVD drive ?

My 4.2 Wii has one of those new drives so I can't play backups from DVD.

Most people use a usb hdd. Play.com has a seagate 500gb which is supported by the wii for 44.99. You will need usb loader gx to load the games.

and if ur looking for USB HDDs, i highly recommend WD elements series of USB HDDs, theyre cheaper than Seagate but still just as good. a USB DVD drive is about 30 plus all those DVDs so in the long run its probably cheaper
    hope i helped,

I have a Wii that wont play dvds or backups. My wife bought me a USB Dvd writer for christmas for my net book. I tried plugging in my dvd writer and using using usb loader. USB loader tried to load a game from the usb writer (original game). It started to load then it froze. My guess is with some tweeking from the people that made usb loader, it is quite possible that we will be able to play our backups on dvd, through a usb dvd drive. Who knows maybe we'll be able to dump a game right onto a dvd -r.

I recently bought an external DVD writer for the exact same reason that the uploader stated - I have that new D3-2 drive and I cannot play backups through the Wii itself. I am happy to report that after buying a GearHead USB DVD writer model # 24DVDEXTLS from Office Depot that it works AWESOME with uLoader 4.9A! There is no lag in games and they all play flawlessly! It's been said on here that USB HDD's are the way to go, however for those who may have been wondering about an external DVD drive's capabilities on the Wii, it works and I would definitely recommend it to a friend! I will post again once I have tried playing a gamecube backup on it (although I doubt it would work given it doesn't work on a HDD to begin with). Also, the DVD drive I got reads and I assume plays double layer discs too (e.g. Super Smash Bros. Brawl). I will post more information on that as well!

I bought a 400G iPro drive (pretty cheap, $70CDN @futureshop) and it works awesomely. Only bad thing is it requires two usb ports (one for data, one for power). I guess that isn't so bad because if I'm gonna be using a peripheral I will most likely buy it anyway so I can disconnect the USB drive.

I have a D3-2 drive as well. I have my games on a WD My passport and it works great. All the RB games and GH5 work, but I can't seem to get the instruments for the other GH games (GHWT, GHSM, etc.) to work. The games boot, but no joy with the instruments. Does anyone think an External USB DVD drive would get the instruments to sync? I'm not sure why it would, but I thought I would ask anyway.

Is it possible it's my instruments? I have RB Beatles instruments. I guess I blew it off initially since they work with GH5.
