About to softmod my wii - leave at 3.4 or update to 4.2?

I plan on softmodding my wii soon but I'm wondering if it's better to update to 4.2 or leave it at its current firmware 3.4u and softmod that. I've searched threads for the answer but Im finding mixed answers as some people say to avoid 4.2 like the plague while others claim there is no harm in softmodding a 4.2 wii.

No, don't update to 4.2. This firmware was designed ONLY to remove and disable 3rd paty homebrew. There is no difference in quality of performance between 4.1 and 4.2. You can follow the 4.1 tut in my signature below and have a look in the Recommended Faqs section of the site. Definitely don't go to 4.2 if you don't have to.

Is there anyway to update to 4.1? The 3.4 update doesn't allow for the use of SD cards that exceed 2gb (mine is 8gb) and I would like to avoid purchasing one as I already one.

Also, is it possible to play online without firmware 4.2? I own a PS3 and the only way to play online is if you have the latest firmware installed.

You'd have to get a game disc like new super mario bros. with a 4.1 update on it and let it run. Otherwise you'd need a compatible sd card to install the firmware.

Yes you can go online with lower fw versions. Many, many people on this site play online all the time on 3.2 firmware with no issues at all.

Would that be the only way? I can't softmod 3.4 then update to 4.1 once I run NSMB on the softmodded wii?

    EDIT:

I do have a SD card lower than 2gb, but its only 512mb I think I remember reading that this not large enough to softmod the wii, right?

Sure if you can softmod first then go for it. If you do that though, follow This Guide to update to 4.1 instead. A disc update may work, but it might also disrupt the homebrew you install.

Sounds good I think I'll give that a shot, final question though does a a 512 mb sd card contain enough space to perform a softmod?

Yes. You might eventually want to up to a 1 or, preferably, 2gb card. But yes 512 is good.
