Softmod possible for Nintendo Wii Black?

    Hello guys,

Tomorrow I'm gonna get my very own Nintendo Wii at last, but I want to get the black Wii and not the white one. But I don't know if I can softmod the black one and I can't find the answer anywhere to that question.

Does any of you Wii experts know the answer? If so, please replay!

    Thanks in advance!

I imaging the colour of the outside of the Wii has nothing to do with whether it can be modded or not.

As the very latest System can be modded then I would say the answer to your question is yes.

You're partially right, the outside color of the Wii should have nothing to do with whether it can be modded or not. But because the black version of the Wii is so new, it has only two different serialtypes (LEF500/501). That both have the same specs as the white Wii since march 2009 (LEF121/200). Which can be fully modded to play backups or other programs or homebrew from the DVD drive (without it being swapped for a D2C or D2E).

So the colour is an indictation for the time being that the Wii has an D3-2 drive that can't be fully modded. It can be modded to almost fully function on a external harddisk or SD card, but (right now) it can't be modded so it can play backups from the DVD drive (without swapping the dvddrive).

    But thanks anyway!

D'OH!! It seems I should have done a bit more research before taking the plunge and buying a black wii to replace the old white one which died. We have a few backup games on DVD-Rs so it seems I'll have to use a USB hard drive instead now.

Quick question about that though (perhaps off-topic) - I read about an older version of the USB loader and it said I had to put the games into the wii to copy them over - is that still the case? Or can I load them on from the PC and then plug the drive into the Wii?

@ link0r - Grab USB loader GX, an external usb drive (seagate based preferrably) and wbfs manager 3.0.1. Install wbfs manager 3.0.1 onto a pc and use that to move games back and forth. It`s quick and easy, just make sure you have enough disk space on the pc to compensate for packing and unpacking.. The games you copy to the wii disk are normally much smaller than the original 4.5gb size so you`ll only end up with the used space of each game. Most are small and you should be ok for 300-400 games on a 500gb disk.

    Cheers,

wii666, thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated.

My 120Gb drive is actually a Seagate one (USB host powered though if it makes a difference) so I'll give it a go - saves me having to keep cleaning DVD-Rs that always seem to have more finger prints on than a CSI crime scene!

@ link0r - Well once you go USB you won`t want to go back... Also grab Neogamma 7 or 8, you might need to use that to launch some of the newer releases until scrubbed dumps are released... I had to use it initially to run wiifit plus, but that was because i was impatient and didn`t want to wait for the better dumps to appear.

    cheers,

@ wii666 - I finally went through the steps this morning (couldn't get onto the TV during the week!) and it works a treat! I'm waiting on a new Y-cable for my USB powered drive as it won't get enough power from my PC (works fine on the laptop and the wii though... very odd).

As for not wanting to go back to discs, you could be so very right there - it's remarkably quicker than loading the DVDs and my son has figured it out already so it's all good Just need to figure out why installing NeoGamma hasn't given me a channel on systemmenu now but it's all working fine so far! [[edit: figured it out, just had to install a forwarder channel and have the app on my sd card - it's ok now]]

Thanks again for your advice on all this.

@ iwiifreely - have you been able to fix the 3rd wii? Or is it permanently bricked now?
