I read somewhere on this forum that no. However, the post was dated May 09. I know my Wii has the latest hardware LU64, firmware 4.1. I know I can install homebrew, and if I'm a bit careful get all the things necessary to play backups installed through softmod. But, will it be able to read DVDRs at the end of it? I can't find anywhere saying that new solutions won't work.

for LU64 Wii's (this will work on any wii, 3.0-3.4, 4.0, 4.1 + & foreign equivalents)

No, D3-2 DVD drives cannot read DVDR's. But there's no real way to tell if you have one or not without opening your console.
Maybe you should try looking into USB loading before burned disc loading, just in case you do have a D3-2 drive.
