User what circumanstances could I brick my Wii

I'm thinking of doing a softmod on my Wii. I know a modchip would probably be more fool proof and less limiting, but I only have a few games that I wanna play backups of and don't really plan on doing much else. The only thing that really concerns me though is that I've read that I could brick my Wii by using a softmod. Could someone tell me under what circumstances this could happen? I'm assuming when installing the softmod is one of those circumstances, but after it's been installed, doing what else could result in a bricked Wii?

    Thanks,
    Harry

Its not that easy to brick a wii really, if you had a power cut/pulled plug during installation of something critical (sys menu or ios sys menu runs off) that would do it. More common bricks come after accepting an update from a game from a different region to yours, installing a bad wad or installing a bad health screen/customisation....all of those are recoverable if you have preloader or starfall though.
If you have bootmii installed to boot2 and you have made a backup of your NAND then you are almost brick-proof, so if i was you i would try bootmii, if your wii is too new for bootmii then use preloader.

So installing updates from the correct region (for example thru the internet from the actual update menu on the Wii) would not result in a brick? Does an update usually get rid of the soft mod and require reinstallation?

    Thanks,

Updates leave softmods intact, they just make it difficult (but not impossible) to add new mods....

bootmii is what you need to backup your nand, it only works on older wiis though but its worth trying, get it from BootMii.org , it will only be able to do the backup if you can install it to boot2.
