Post Retro Wii + Best GC & Wiigames project.

    Dearest Wiihackers,

Greetings from the UK. Hope you are well and don't mind this question.

Right now I don't have a games console, just a PC. From time to time I have friends over at my flat and I would like to get some decent four player games ready for when they next come over. I also would like a retro games collection. I also don't have much money at the moment so I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible. From my research so far my plan is to get a cheap second hand Wii, some cheap controllers, soft-mod it, plug an external hard drive into it.

    Objectives:
    • The best Wii & Gamecube games all running from an external hard drive.
    • Massive Retro Library with complete rom-sets for everything that isn't too space prohibitive.
    • Coherent and consistent Front-end if possible.
    • Media playing abilities a plus but not essential. -(stream from primewire/1channel + play downloaded TV shows+movies from USB)

So far my plan is to get a cheap second hand Wii, some cheap controllers, soft-mod it, plug an external hard drive into it, get emulators for all consoles running emulators for

    • MegaDrive(genesis) - All English Roms
    • MegaCD/SegaCD - The best ones
    • SNES - All English Roms
    • Mame - All roms that work with wii
    • N64 - All roms that work on wii
    • TurboGrafx - Full set
    • SMS - Full set
    • NES - Full set
    • NEOGEO - Full set
    • GB/GBC - Full set
    • GBA - Full set
    • CPS1/2 - All roms that work with wii (is this the same as the mame ones?)
    • Gamecube - All the best/above average games
    • Wii - All the best/above average games

Would like, not probably not possible from my research so far:
    • Saturn
    • Playstation 1

    Shopping List:
    • Wii
    • Hard Drive (Size?)
    • Additional Wiimote & Nunchuck
    • 4 Controllers (Gamecube or Classic?)
    • SD card (size?)

    Here are my questions:
    1. How much space do I need for the all the best Wii & Gamecube games along with all the roms mentioned above?
    2. Right now, if you were in my situation, ordering from amazon which hard drive would you get? (trying to keep costs to a minimum)
    3. How would you organize all the Emulators and USB loaders in a neat coherent and consistent way. I may have non-computer savvy friends round who want to play things and it would be great if the interface is intuitive and simple for them, especially if they could just jump into games rather then me have to do it all for them.
    4. Which controllers would you get? Wii Classic pads or do I need to get 4 Gamecube comparable controllers? Can anyone reccomend any third party pads which are good but affordable.
    5. Am I making the right decision to use the Wii as an emulator? Back when I was living at my parents house I used an original Xbox I soft modded.
    6. Am I right in saying Saturn & PS1 are not possible to emulate to any playable level?
    7. Right now CEX have a selection of Wii's. https://uk.webuy.com/search/index.php?stext=*&catid=796 . My current thinking is to get a bog-standard unboxed white Wii. Is there any advantage to getting a black one or a more modern one?
    8. Is there anywhere even cheaper in the UK to get one? Can't find one on ebay cheaper.
    9. If I'm buying an external Hard drive do i need a big SD Card? Can I just get a 2gb cheap one? Are there some emulators which only run from the SD Card
    10. From my current research, when formatting the hard drive, I put the first partition as a 30gb Fat32 partition which I fill with all the Roms (30gb should be enough right?) and the rest as NTFS to fill with gamecube & Wii Isos using Wii Backup Manager.
    11. Any good ways of streaming shows from Primewire and similar websites?

Really appreciate your time & help. I've done my due diligence with researching but a lot of the threads that I've found have been from 2009 etc so there is a good chance that things have improved since then. I find that generally when approaching projects like this you can save yourself a lot of trial and error by asking people who have been involved in it for a long time their expert advice.

There is a lot in there that I can't answer for you because it sounds like you intent to pirate your games which we here at WiiHacks do not support. I can tell you though, GCN games will not work from NTFS. GCN will only play off FAT32.

If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct

Thanks, thats really helpful. So the only the Wii games go on the NTFS?

Honestly, I'd recommend the entire drive be FAT32. There are ways to get large Wii images installed to a FAT32 drive and they are still functional. Then it will have the compatibility for GameCube and other emulator's ROMs.

We have a FAT32 guide (linked in my signature) that shows how you can do this.

For GameCube games to work, the partition has to be formatted with 32k clusters. If the FAT32 doesn't show this too, the Dios Mios guide should (also linked in my sigature).

I've used fat32 since it was possible with no issues. I would go with a used wii. I get mine from a pawn shop for $35 bucks with one wiimote and controller. I would get at least a 2TB hard drive for future expansion (they're getting cheaper now). I get complete systems for about 100 -110 bucks and give them away to family. Don't count out local stores for hard drives, they sometimes have great deals or discounts!

Don't forget that you can't copy a hard drive full of Wii games and give it to someone, that would be piracy.

If you want to give a Wii and hard drive away to friends so they can install their library, that's fine.
