you have to have your wii online for starters.
after you get that hooked up
your click the icon in the bottom right of your screen.
that takes you to your wii message board.
while in there there are two icons on the bottom left.
click the rightmost icon of the thwo displayed there.
That will bring up memo pad, the messaging tool, and your address book.
Click on your address book.
that is where your wii code is, and through that menu you register other peoples codes on your machine
both you and your friend have to enter each others friend codes. When done successfully your wiis can communicate. You can sent each other messages, photos, or gifts from the wii shopping channel. YOu can also swap miis, and when you go to your mii channel, and configure your Miis to "Travel" they will be viewable on your friends mii perade.
Also that works vice versa. All your friends you have registered, if they have travelling miis, you will see them in your mii perade in your mii channel. I currently have a perade of over 40 miis.
Also some online games may need friend codes, though I am not sure about that.
