I have a Japanese Wii console RVL 001(JPN) with a GC2-D2C chip, modded with Wasabi DX.
The machine refuses to play copies, except those made exactly to NTSC-J format, burned from ISOs.
A lot of searching on the net, eg. Wii Drive Chip Database and a subsequent query to Mod chip com, it was revealed that my drive is a D3-2 and won't work with other region disks.
Could anyone tell me if swapping the drive board with a D2A would work?

That's not a D3-2 drive; such a drive will refuse to play ANY backup. Yours plays backups to your region (Japan). There should be something for the Wasabi to play out of region games. Keep in mind, if your Wii is @ 4.2 or 4.3, it locks you out (hardmodders) from doing so. There's a way to downgrade back to 4.1 just for such a user, and it can be found here.

Actually I checked my Wii and the version is 4.1J. So what have I got and what can I do :confused:
Checked the database again. It says:
DVD drive: D4 (previously D3S) - The circuitboard on the drive is half the size of the previous revisions. This drive has a smaller and more compact drive board then the previous editions. It's still based on the D3-2 chipset but is smaller and is call the D4 (previously also called the D3S).

OK, let me put it this way: a D3-2 or a D4 will in no uncertain terms NOT run ANY backup, regardless of region. You say your drive will run NTSC-J backups. See what I mean? On the 4.1: there should be a way via Wasabi to enable out of region gaming (which is what you're asking about/needing). Check the documentation on how to do this; failing that, see the illustration here (I'm betting DIP switches #1 and #2 are in the down position on your Wasabi DX).
You are correct. The dip switches are configured to my region, which is Hiroshima, Japan. I apologize for not having made that clear initially.
So the illustration makes the case for me on how to change that, correct? Yes, you have to change those DIP switches...
Edit: you could always softmod it, which allows for out of region game playing (thus avoiding the cumbersome task of manually altering the DIP switches).
Instructions with the Wasabi :
Check the dip switches on the Wasabi DX and configure them to your region.
Now this is then what had me confused. 'to your region' should read 'your region of choice'.
Hardmodding with this chip becomes interesting only if I had a second or even a third console. One for local Japanese games, and the others for different regions, right?
