Getiing new Wii to play backup DVDs

    Hi all,

I've got a new Wii and it has the D3-2 DVD.
I ordered a WasabiDX as it was stated as working on ALL Wii consoles, when in fact it will not run on the D3-2s.

I really don't want to have the hassle of running SD cards, so am thinking of replacing the D3-2 with an older version that the WasabiDX supports.

I would like clarification before I spend some money though.

If I buy an older (d2E and older) DVD controller board, is this all I will need with the existing DVD drive and WasabiDX to be able to use backup DVDs?

    Thanks in advance

    Anyone?
There a D2B board on ebay for £20 that is interesting me...

Are there any issues I should know about after I've done the board swap?

why try swapping the board, when for an extra £30 you can get a decent usb hdd to run games. Think of it as an investment....no more buying/burning discs.

I know what you are saying, but I like the clean look of the Wii as it is.
I'm not keen on the LCD 'stand', or indeed a plug coming out the front of of the Consoles disc port on the USB solutions I've seen.

I don't like the idea of another box (the HDD) sitting next to the unit either.
I'm looking for a stealth install that will let me load discs as if they were normal Wii game discs.

The soft mod scares me a little bit, having to be careful who/what updates the firmware incase it bricks it.

Even if you replace the board you would still need to softmod in order to play the backups. Really though a usb hdd to play games is far better. When the wii reads a backup disc it reads at 3x speed which causes some lagging in video content through the game. Usb reads at 8x( think thats right), its deffinately much faster and plays better.

You are talking about the WODE or the Sundriver!!!

You dont need any of that... Go to your local Walmart and pick up a Westerndigital USB Hardrive and that is all you need.... Then do some searching around the forums on how to set it up and softmod and play games via HDD.... All that is connected is 1 usb cord to the BACK of the wii and out of site out of mind.... BEST WAY HANDS DOWN!!!!!

    Why the softmod?
I thought the board swap would let me play the dvd backups? I'm thinking of getting the DX then converting it to a zero with a D2B board.

So long as it's not a D4 board (a heck of a lot smaller than any previous PCB), yes you can do a drive (or rather PCB attached to drive if you want) swap out. Emuhack was simply saying what's easier/cheaper/faster. Either is a valid method. Softmod is free, Wasabi isn't -- your choice but OK as stated.

Thanks for clearing up that confusion. I was worried for a minute! It was CrazyCastle's post about still having to soft mod that got me thinking.

Mine has the D3-2 board according to the "serial Number" spreadsheet.

Thank you all for your advice. I'll post how it all went when I get the parts.

Looks like my Ebay source has let me down on the D2B board...
I can see a D2C on there that looks tempting.

Is there any differences between the D2B and d2C I should know about that will affect the WasabiDX / WiiClip V16 install?

Heh, THIRD update here. I'm sure someone must be reading with interest...

I got fed up with waiting for parts, so followed the softmod instructions.
All went pretty well and I installed the USB loader and Disc loader (Neo?)

I am waiting for a USB drive to arrive, so thought what the hell, I'll try a disc backup through Neo and guess what?

    IT WORKS lol.

I can only assume that the chipset database is wrong, as it states my serial number has the new D3-2 DVD board.
I assume this can't be the case, as my backup discs are working fine.

Thanks to all for the help on this forum. Top notch.

FURTHER EDIT: The HDD is now here and after regressing the USB loader back to V921, It can now Rip DVDs and play them off the hard drive.

I ordered the D2C board, as I think they will be pretty rare soon. Once that arrives I will have the backup of the Wasabi (+clip) and the D2C board in the event that the (inevitable) firmware upgrade bricks the softmod.
