Question WasabiDX vs new Drivekey confusion

    Hello,

First I wanna say I am fairly new to wii modding. I have old wii with 3.2U firmware and it was bought a year ago. I was doing some research about my options whether to softmod or just chip my wii.
After all i decided to go easy way for now - and chip it.

I was looking to get new Drivekey(with NSMB support), but after reading news not really sure now...

Seeing that guys with WasabiDX chips had confirmed that they got new Mario to work with new patch from Wasabi website - I am starting to think that wasabi chip is the way to go now. And considering that they can update their chips with only dvd (the easiest way there is), no jtag update needed, WasabiDX becomes numero 1 in my opinion.

What do you think? Should i buy Drivekey and wait till they get it working or just go with Wasabi and enjoy promt support?

Also can anyone confirm if new BCA patcher for NSMB backup (from wasabi website)can be used to make Drivekey work with new games (like new mario)?

On a side note: Do i need to update my wii firmware (from game disks) to play new games? or i just block the update somehow (maybe using some of the programmes available) and just play them that way?
Cause as i read somewhere here that using 3.2U firmware gives you ability to play scrubbed games, which is not possible with newer firmwares...

    Thanks

I would like to know which one people would go for, I am also going towards the WasabiDX but I am still unsure.

You can update the Wii firmware to v4.1 by getting Mario Kart I think and it will update it from the disk but do not update from the web otherwise it will go to v4.2.

I currently have v4.2 but I am not too bothered about playing multi-region games I will just stick with my PAL games.

This might not always be the case but sure is friggin convenient for right now. There may be a time where the wasabi does also need a jtag patch.

No this patcher is only for wasabi chips.

I sell modchips and the Wasabi DX is a great chip, especially if you mount it as a Zero! It's what i have in my personal wii.

Drivekey is the "popular" chip. Wiikey guys made it so it must be good right? meh.. i like my wasabi.

I presume I will be OK installing the WasabiDX into a V4.2 Wii as long as I stick with local region backups?

Also how can you mount the WasabiDX as a Zero and what difference does this make?

Many people do swear by the softmod option and I was thinking of that route but was scared I would be unable to get my Wii back to a virgin state when I wanted to and also the complications of bricking it scare me a bit.

I have the WasabiDX with firmware 3.4. With the obvious exception of NSMB, it has played absolutely everything I have thrown at it. (Have not tried using the update as yet - but reports indicate it works OK.).

The WasabiDX has no problems with scrubbed games, however the Drivekey may have some issues in that area. Take a look at the Drivekey forum for some more info.

**Note that I am not sure what effect the later firmwares (4.1 & 4.2) have on the Wasabi's ability to play scrubbed games as I am still on 3.4.

A mate has a WasabiDX also, and he is also very happy.

    Hope this helps.

Just put in an order for a WasabiDX, I hope it does work properly with the 4.2E firmware. I did ask the shop and they said it would work with local games and not multi-region. Will let you know what happens.

Thanks all for your replies I decided to order WasabiDX. Strangely all my local shops out of that particular chip (seems like it is in high demand after all). Hopefully I'll get it by Christmas!
Also, I think it is just a beginning for BCA protection, and there will be more games with that thing on... so having a patcher for iso is more handy, than having to update your chip's firmware all the time (imho). I hope in time there will be universal bca patcher.

    Long live Wii modding community!

    Cheers
