Yes, 3x == stuttering on movies

Ok, I'm a n00b here, but I thought I'd chime in because from reading these boards and multiple reviews on the internet, I was led to believe there was no issue whatsoever with the 3x speed of the 4th gen chips.

Well, that's BS, so BUYERS BEWARE.

I burnt SuperMario Galaxy at 1x speed on verbatim media and the intro movie stutters. Not the image, but the sound, definitely. It's not only very noticeable, it will make you turn the sound down because it's so annoying.

I am rather infuriated by some reviews that were posted online that claim there was 'absolutely no difference' between 3x and 6x, which is complete nonsense.

So there.

Not necessarily possible (or most practical) for everyone. Some may have the D2E with the epoxy on it, like mine did, so don't have much choice but to get the 4th gen chips. I really wanted to get the Zero, but I opened up my box before I ordered to confirm which one I would need, and unfortunately, mine had the epoxy on it.

Does the Drivekey have the 3X limitation like the Wasabi DX? I was debating on which one to get since it sounded like these were the only 2 modchips out there now that can get around this black epoxy without having to do any soldering. After all the rave reviews on Wasabi, and the claims that 3X did not show any noticeable performance issues, I decided on the DX. I'm a bit disappointed as well. But if you can put up with the movie parts, the game play itself is fine. Just sucks on certain games that the video and audio sound so terrible.

Were you able to confirm this yourself like you mentioned you would try on the other post?

mario galaxy is known to have movie playback issues at 3x speeds. but that is really one of the very few games that do this. i've tested about 450 games using the backup launcher, which runs at 3x as well, and seriously its really not an issue. gameplay is perfect, just movies skip, no big deal, start playing and go make a sandwich, when you come back you'll be playing at normal speeds

If you convert the wasabi dx into a zero as per intructions on the wasabi site by soldering 5/6 wires does the ribbon calbe still have to go through the dx or does it get put back as original ie from motherboard into dvd drive

Try playing house of dead overkill... The gameplay is stutters all through. I am going to buy the zero clip soon so I get time, no biggie though - everything else works great

yes, get the clip. its so much better. thats how im using mine. plus i think the 3x speed cause more strain on the drive, u can hear its louder. the dx was a little louder, but the drivekey was even louder yet.

I can see games with extensive and perhaps unoptimised streaming might have difficulty at 3x speed, it could be an issue with future games particularly texture streaming which would be pretty high bandwith

Yes, I have the DriveKey chip, and it has the same issues as the Wasabi DX due to the 3x speed limitation. It's the same for all ribbon type modchips out there (i.e. also the FlatMod chip), due to the way these chips work (on the fly patching of data passing the bus).

I have tested a vast number of games, too. Super Mario Galaxy and WarioWare: Smooth Moves are by far the most problematic ones (very choppy video/audio playback in the intro scenes).

Wrt the gameplay, I have noted some stuttering problems in LEGO StarWars only - which problems I assume are caused by the 3x drive speed limitation as well. Other than that, all games seem to play fine.

cigaro, many thanks for this post. I'm still going to buy WasabiDX, but it's much better to know such issues before you buy. Now I have made some searching and it looks like actually all the gen4 chips have this 3x issue, but it's still better then soldering.
Plus I'm thinking about USB Loader - than the speed of the chip shouldn't be an issue, but I'll wait with soft mods after my warranty finishes (2 years ).

What makes me crazy are reviews like this:

where there's no info about it!! I'd comment this review, but it's closed
