Hello from Uberstrike!

Uberstrike is a social first person shooter with forums, which I am a moderator on. One of my friends from there introduced me to this site, and I'm glad they did. I know I've had this account for a while, and even made some posts, but I never really made an introduction post.

This site has helped me with every Wii question I've had, anything I need to do, anything I've been curious about, anything I ever thought of. I love this site, and all the guides, they are the best I've ever seen (and I have looked in various other forums and sites for guides, and at YouTube, which I found was typically a fail). Please keep putting your hard work into this site! I'm considering donating. ;)

Anyways, one thing that I haven't found a 100% clear guide for (usually if I find a guide that looks good, I use it, but this is something I'm more concerned about then other things) is updating to 4.1. I've heard that it's the best firmware to be on if it's an option, which I think it should be for me. I'm on 4.0 with a Bootmii boot2 capable Wii (purchased this sometime back in '07 - '08, don't remember, but it works) and all the things that Dogeggs' guide instructs you to install, but at the time, I skipped the 4.1 update step, as I didn't want to do that because I saw it as a risky thing.

If someone wants to help direct me to a good 4.1 update guide that is newb friendly, only assumes you have the basics, etc, please link it. Someone suggested I follow mauifrog's Any Wii softmod guide to get updated to 4.1, but in my mind, it seems unnecessary, as your going through all the steps of softmodding all over again. If possible, I'd like a simple guide that tells you to install some IOSes or something, run 4.1 updater, and done.... err some simple steps that don't seem like re-softmodding your Wii. If you need to know what I have, I can post a syscheck.

Waninkoko did make a safe 4.1 updater but it is gone from his blog. Probably because it's old and he's up to a 4.3 updater or something like that. You could just update to 4.1 if you want but we don't have a specific guide for doing so to my knowledge. It's not a bad thing to run Maui's whole guide because not only will it get you to the system menu you want to be at but it will update everything that's currently outdated on your system. Seeing as how you already have a functioning homebrew channel it makes everything all that much simpler.

Does this updater install everything you need? Because in Dogeggs' guide download pack there is a 4.1 updater, I'm 99% sure it's by Waninkoko. From my understanding, you need to install and patch some IOS to slot 60 before running any type of offline updater (other then discs, but they wipe some things out, I'm talking about the homebrew tools for updating). I do know that Mauifrog's guide updates everything, which is good, but it still seems like your re-softmodding your whole Wii. As I see no downside to keeping the current version of everything I have (it works fine, and without a single problem), I feel like I should stay with what I have, if I actually remembered the process I went through (I softmodded months ago, and didn't use my Wii after that for a while, so if I were to try and describe what I did, I probably couldn't) I would just be stubborn and not use Mauifrog's guide. I'm going to research this though, I feel like in the end, I'll end up running his guide anyways.

There is no risk to installing HBC / BootMii Boot2 with HackMii installer v0.8 (I think that's the version in Mauifrog's guide) over my current installation, right? Other then that, I'm pretty sure that there is no risk to installing all the IOS / cIOS also listed in that guide, despite what I currently have (Waninkoko's cIOS 38 r17 to slot 249, and other things that the guide I followed instructed me to install)?

I'm probably being overly cautious, but to me, the Wii seems alot easier to mess stuff up on then other devices. I've got a jailbroken iPhone that I've actually "bricked" twice, and had to use usbmuxd with some scripts and iRecovery to fix it. In my mind, I always think, "if I somehow mess something up, can I fix it?" For me, the answer for Wii is usually no, unless it's just as simple as restoring my BootMii backup (I really don't know how that works, but from my understanding, BootMii just clones your Wii contents, like hard drive cloners). One thing in my mind that is probably incorrect, is that most files that install IOS to your system, are very dangerous, if you get one thing wrong, you could be bricked. Like I said, probably wrong, but I don't have a good understanding of how the system works, like I do with other devices.

The short version... All I need to hear is that running through mauifrog's guide with what I have is safe, and if something does go wrong, bootmii is gonna fix it because it's a full backup. If that is how it is, then I'll go through the guide just because it updates me to 4.1.

From memory, Doggeggs guide came with a 4.1 system menu wad. You just installed it with wad manager! But before doing so you must install the patched ios60 wad first! Which also comes with Doggeggs download pack.
