Exclamation Questions, about the basics of D4 USB modding

    Hi,

My first post, I'm a complete novice to Wii hacking stuff. I would like to ask the following questions simple questions:

    1. Are the Sundriver and WODE Jukebox the only means to hardmod a D4 (or any other) Wii to get USB Harddrive support? Seems the Wiikey Fusion only supports SD Card loading.

    2. Are there any advantages over softmodding than buying a WODE, other than price / work involved? Perhaps I will not have access to some HomeBrew features (or something else) available to softmodders?

    3. What is Wodeflow? I have tried Googling for the definition of this term, and have found nothing describing what it is, and yet this term seems to be floating around everywhere. For some reason people who decide to "use" this end up softmodding their Wii anyway, which makes me wonder if I should even bother with a WODE. Which leads to the next question which is very similar....

    4. If I buy a WODE, will I end up just wanting to softmod the darn thing anyway? I've seen a few people arguing that hardmodding it was a waste of money & time, without presenting any concise reasons why.

    Thanks in advance!

I hope these questions aren't too basic, but I don't see a FAQ sticky in this forum section.

    1. only ones I can think of right now
    2. if you want homebrew anyways, just softmod it completely, no need in wasting money on a hardmod, unless you want to load/play GC isos

I don't want to "steal" the topic but I also don't want to start a brand new one since I have similar questions and it would be easier to use this topic. I hope that the original topic creator don't mind it!

So... I bought a Wii some time ago and one of the main reasons was to play GC games. Looking at Wii Drive Chip Database, I discovered that my console has a 100% chance of being one of them carriers of this... GC2-D4 drive. Ie it won't read backups. Now, for Wii games I just don't care... My main thing are GC games right now (especially a few wrestling games) as I already have and play the Wii games I was interested in.
My questions are: the only way to play GC games besides owning the original discs in a D4 is a SunDriver mod, will it play GC ISOs (I reckon this is what SunDriver does?)? And if yes, will SunDriver work with all region games including NTSC-J and PAL ones or only NTSC-U?

A huge thank you in advance for anyone who can provide me an answer! I searched for a precise answer but to be honest I didn't find one. Similar issues appeared but never the exact answer I need.

Well, you mustn't have been looking too hard Because the first feature on the WODE site says:

    - Play Wii & GC game ISOs direct from USB Mass Storage devices @8X read speed (HDD and FLASH drive)

Meaning you won't be able to stick the GC DVD-R in your drive and play it, but it looks like it will work from a USB harddrive. I think you're in the clear! But then again, it says D3-2 is the latest supported chipset, but I think the author is too lazy to update it and add a D4 on the list. It interfaces with the drive cable and I don't imagine it has changed. Actually, remembering now I saw someone else asking if his D4 will work and the answer was 'yes' on the official forums. So you're ok.

PS: Anyone know if GC iso's will be bootable from a USB HDD on the softmod stuff anytime?

Thank you for your reply. I saw WODE's site but since it didn't mention D4, I thought that it wasn't supported.

I just have one more thing to clear up: I saw that SunDriver works with a SATA HD... But what if I don't have a SATA HD to connect to SunDriver? I saw something about selecting games from the PC but to be honest I didn't understand it fully. I mean, will it work if I have the ISOs in my PC and connect it via USB to the SunDriver? Or I must have a SATA HD for the mod to work (since I have to replace the DVD driver with it)?
I ask this because as was already mentioned, WODE works with an USB HD - which I have. In the case of SunDriver, I don't have a SATA HD but would be able to play with my PC turned on and connected via USB if it works with the ISOs on my PC.

Thank you! And sorry if I'm a noob... But we have to start somewhere!

I can't really remember sundriver but I think you do need the Sata hdd installed in it then that replaces your DVD drive. The USB connection is to transfer your games from pc to the hdd.

Wode is a better product and why we discontinued carrying sundriver but still buy the wodejukebox. Confirmed it does operate fine with D4 drives.

Also the advantage to using wode with wodeflow vs softmod besides gc is that you are loading at 8x speed, ripping is very easy, and you have backup methods of launching titles, less work involved, less to learn and easy to do without worrying you will brick the thing. But we still do offer softmod installs for those that want it at our store but nothing beats the wode.
