I got a little trouble with installing cIOS38rev17. It's a clean 3.1J Wii without any cIOS ever installed. I just installed Homebrew channel and BootMii (@ boot2) yesterday. I was told to select IOS36 during the installation. But it's not in the list. I can only see IOS4 - IOS35. Which one should I choose? Thanks!

Follow the link for 3.1-4.1 consoles by dogeggs in the original post. The download pack there contains the files you'll need to fully softmod your system (including IOS36) along with the instructions. Start at the top to make sure there wasn't anything you missed when installing HBC (like dvdx) and to make a solid NAND backup.

Thanks, Ithian! IOS36 is missing on my 3.1J console because it's introduced in 3.2. Now I've already got HBC/DVDX/BootMii installed, and NAND backed up. Do I need to follow the tutorial from very begining. If not, the next step is Trucha Bug Restorer. And it seems I need IOS36 to install it, which is missing at the moment.

    Download Dop-Mii_v12_CB2_BB1.zip
    Extract directly to sd:\
If the app doesn't load when you power the console load it in HBC
Select fakesign IOS36 - 3rd option down first main page

That should install it and run the Trucha step in one process, if not then let me know. Make sure your console is online.

I had a go. DOP-Mii v12 was loaded right after power on. I Chose 'Install IOS36 (v3351) w/FakeSign', and then got an error message:

Current IOS is not 36. Loading IOS36...
    >>ERROR! Failed to load IOS36: ErrorCode (-4100)

It seems I can do nothing without that IOS36. The only way I can think of to put it on is to run official update to 4.2. But it will update boot2 to boot2v4. Does it mean I cannot have BootMii on boot2? Is there anyway to downgrade boot2v4?

Don't update to 4.2. If you have a game for your region with 3.2 or 4.1 on it you can take the update on that (use this list). You can also try loading DOP-Mii with IOS30. I can't remember off the top of my head if it's patched in 3.1 but it might be. If that works then install IOS36 with all patches in IOS, BC, MIOS.s

Haha, the solution is easy. Download IOS36 v3351 via NUS Downloader, then install it via WAD Manager. I can see IOS36 now. Thanks, guys!

Something weird here! I thought the IOS36 (v3351) should have the FakeSign. But it hasn't. When I tried to install some other stuff (e.g. cIOS38), I was told it cannot find FakeSign on IOS36.

Then I tried to run FakeSign Restorer (via NUS). ISO15 (v257) was installed. But while installing IOS36 (v3351), I kept getting network connection error (I tried tens of times). So I manually downloaded it via NUS Downloader and put on SD, this one should be exactly the same as the one installed previously. Then FakeSign Restorer told me, this IOS36 file cannot be opened.

I'm totally lost. Can anyone help me out?

BTW, the Wii still has 3.1J system menu.

Thanks, Ithian! It turns out this is the solution for me. Now I got all the stuff installed.

    Code:
IOS 37 -> Support for games with instruments (Rockband/GH/etc.)
IOS 38 -> Widely known, supported, and stable base (USE THIS ONE IF YOU AREN'T SURE)
IOS 57 -> Slightly increased USB loading speed (maybe 1-2 seconds, if that)
IOS 60 -> Better network code / The Conduit (?)
    IOS 70 -> SD/SDHC speed/wifi improvements (?)

*Monster Hunter 3 users go HERE.
**Note that only base IOS 38 is compatible with Wad Manager.
Finally got Wad Manager working properly under cIOS Rev19. Thanks
