Priiloader Hand Book

Hopefully this tutorial will help answer most questions people usually ask about Priiloader and Preloader so here goes. Before I'd like to mention, this guide was written by myself as JoostinOnline.

FAQs

Q: What is Priiloader/Preloader?
A: Preloader is a homebrew application which places itself before the system menu and patches the system menu to remove limitations and add a few things. Since its put before the system menu, it allows you to load into the homebrew channel directly. This allows you to repair your wii if you should ever brick, once the brick isn't a full brick (deleted or corrupted System IOS or corrupted boot). Priiloader is a modification of Preloader created by DacoTaco.



Q: Why Priiloader/Preloader, why not just use bootmii?
A: Not everyone can install bootmii as boot2. They only have the option of installing it as an IOS which isn't very reliable and can only save you from semi and banner bricks. While Preloader can not save you from full bricks too, it is more reliable than bootmii as an IOS.



Q: How do you uninstall Priiloader/Preloader?
A: You must install a new system menu using Multi-Mod Manager
Multi-Mod Manager can do an online installation and offline install, if you want to do an offline uninstall with Multi Mod Manager, download your system menu using NUSDownloader. Take a look at this tutorial to learn how to use NUSDownloader. If you're using Priiloader, run the installer and press '-' on the wiimote.




Q: Can I install Preloader on Any System Menu?
A: Priiloader v0.6 and above supports hacks_hash.ini allow it to work on ALL!




Q: If I were to brick, how would I access Priiloader/Preloader?
A: While booting your wii, hold on to reset, it should load the preloader menu. From there you can load homebrew channel and install a new system menu and/or uninstall the corrupted wad.




Q: I installed the patched IOS60/70/80 after I installed Priiloader/Preloader and now get the System files are corrupted message, What do I do?
A: Simply, go to the Preloader menu then load homebrew channel then run the Preloader installer again and re-install. The reason is beause IOS60 is patched inorder to run preloader, installing a new IOS60/70/80 removes the patch done by preloader.




Q: I set priiloader to autoboot the system menu but it still boots the Priiloader menu, why is that and what should I do about it?
A: Priiloader v0.2 rev30 broke the autoboot system menu option, so even if set, it will load Priiloader. You will need to install a different version of Priiloader.




Q: Can Preloader/Priiloader help if I get a full brick?
A: No, at this time the only thing that can give you protection from a full brick is bootmii installed as boot2.



Q: What is this hacks.ini/hacks_hash.ini file?
A: Simply put the hacks.ini file is a configuration file for Priiloader/Preloader. Using Priiloader v0.6, a universal config (hacks_hash.ini) can be used. Download hacks_hash.ini HERE (Right Click and Save).



Q: What is the difference between Priiloader and Preloader?
A: Preloader was made by crediar who eventually stopped making releases. The app was then taken up by others and named Priiloader. When preloader was set to boot HBC it looked for the HAXX ticket but homebrew was later renamed to JODI which caused problems. Priiloader looks for both HAXX and JODI Tickets.


Can I install newer versions of Priiloader over older ones instead of un-installing then installing?
A: Yes. Just run the new installer and install like normal.


My Wii sometimes just shows a black screen or just powers on then off but sometimes it works fine, What should I do?
A: Just un-install Priiloader and see if it makes any difference, then find the latest priiloader here and install it.



Its April 1st, When I turn on my Wii it seems I have a brick or/and Priiloader is saying 'Now Repairing, Do not turn off?' What should I do?
A: Preloader pretends to brick you on April 1st (April Fools). Just simply press 'A' when you're at the fake brickscreen. Newer versions of Priiloader shouldn't do this (unconfirmed).

Installation

Important Info

• If you have a previous install of Preloader (not Priiloader), you need to reinstall your System Menu to remove it before installing Priiloader. Instructions will be added soon.
• If you had a previous install of Priiloader, you do not need to uninstall it first. The installer will overwrite the old version.
• The password for files is I-CAN-READ

Using AHBPROT

Requirements

• The Homebrew Channel v1.0.7 or newer.
• A standard SD card 56MB or greater. No SDHC cards. Official Nintendo SD cards (made by Sandisk) are recommended for full compatibility.
• Valid internet settings. You do not need to be connected, but internet has to be set up.

Directions

Part 1 - Preparing your SD card

1. Insert the SD card into your computer.
2. Backup all files on your SD card to your PC.
3. Go to My Computer (just Computer on Vista/7), right-click on the SD card icon, and choose Format.
4. If "Quick Format" is checked, uncheck it.
5. Use FAT16 (aka FAT) as the file system. If you have problems with it, try FAT32. Do not change the allocation unit size.

Make sure you have dosfstools and mtools first. If not install them via your favorite method.

Install the best partition editing software GParted via your favorite method. If a Windows user wants to do things the right way on a proper OS and use this method but doesn't want to fully install Linux they could use GParted Live.

1. Launch GParted.
2. Select your device from the list.
3. Choose Device at the top then click Create Partition Table.
4. A warning will pop up to tell you that you're erasing everything on that device. The advanced options is also on this screen but you shouldn't have to change it. By default it should be on MS-DOS which is what you want. If for some reason it doesn't default to MS-DOS choose it from the advanced options. Click Apply and it will create a new partition table for your device.
5. Click on the unallocated Partition / File System devise on the lower list to highlight it.
6. Choose Partition from the top the click New.
7. A screen will pop where you create your partitions. This is where you can choose partition sizes, types of partition, file systems, how you want it aligned, and label it if you would like. For a small SD card you'll want use the default options and leave it as one primary partition. The only option you'll need to set is File System. Choose FAT16 for cards 2GB and under or FAT32 for cards over 2GB. After you are though choosing the file system click Add.
8. Choose Edit then click Apply All Operations or click the big green check mark.
9. Another warning screen will pop up to make sure you actually want to set your partitions and file types. If you are sure everything is right click Apply.
10. A screen will pop up showing you the pending operations preforming. When it is done press Close.
11. Exit GParted.

If you own a Mac instead of a good computer, follow these instructions, provided by narse1979:

1. Insert SD Card into card reader.
2. Go to Disc Utility (Found in dock or applications/utilities).
3. Select your SD Card in left pane of Disk Utility.
4. Select the 'Erase' Tab.
5. Select the 'FAT' format from the drop down menu. (This is actually FAT32).
6. Enter the volume name if you wish ie. Wii SD Card.
7. Hit erase at bottom right of Disk Utility.

Part 2 - Downloading the files

Choose download(s) depending on what you want to install.
System Menu IOS.zip - DarkCorp System Menu IOS wads. Recommended for brick protection, but not required to install Priiloader.
Pick an installer below. Whichever one you pick will be referred to as Priiloader v0.X.zip, since the instructions are the same.
Priiloader v0.6.zip - The installers for Priiloader v0.6.
Priiloader v0.7.zip - The installers for Priiloader v0.7.

Part 3 - Getting the files on your SD card

Priiloader v0.X.zip

1. Extract the contents of Priiloader v0.X.zip to the root of your SD card.
2. Proceed to Part 4 if you only downloaded Priiloader. If you also downloaded System Menu IOS.zip, follow the directions below first.

System Menu IOS.zip

1. Extract the contents of System Menu IOS.zip to the root of your SD card.
2. Run md5summer.exe and click "Verify Sums." Mac users can use checkSum+. Most Linux distros include a way to check md5 files.
3. Navigate to the SD card from the window that pops up. Double-click "System Menu IOS.md5."
4. If you get a single error, redownload "System Menu IOS.zip" and test the files again. Installing a corrupt System Menu IOS will brick your Wii!
5. If, and only if, you don't get any errors, you can continue.
6. In the root of your SD card, there should be a file named "mmmconfig.txt". Delete it.

Part 4 - Removing the SD card

1. Open My Computer (just Computer on Windows Vista/7) and right click on the SD card icon.
2. Choose Eject.
3. Remove the SD card from your computer and put it in your Wii.

Part 5 - Installing everything

Follow one or both sets of instructions, depending on what you downloaded.

Installing the System Menu IOS's

1. Turn on your Wii and start the Homebrew Channel.
2. Load Multi-Mod Manager AHBPROT.
3. Select Wad Manager. It is the third option.
4. You should see a list of the wad files. Press 1, then A to install all of them.
5. Never uninstall a System Menu IOS! That would result in a full brick!
6. Make sure that they all install successfully. If any fail, install them one by one by selecting one with A, then pressing A again to install it. Then repeat for the rest. If that doesn't work, post which ones failed in this thread.
7. After they all install successfully, press HOME on your Wii remote to exit to the Homebrew Channel.

Installing Priiloader v0.X

1. Turn on your Wii and start the Homebrew Channel.
2. Load Priiloader AHBPROT.
3. Wait a few seconds for install options to come up.
4. Press + to install.
5. There will be a few lines of green text saying some files aren't found. Don't freak out, that is normal.
6. Once the install process is complete, you will be taken back to the Homebrew Channel. Power down your Wii.

Part 6 - Enabling the hacks

1. While your Wii is still off, press and hold RESET on the console.
2. Without letting go of RESET, press POWER.
3. Keep holding RESET down until you see the Priiloader menu.
4. Select the System Menu Hacks option.
5. Enable "Block Online Updates", "Block Disc Updates", and "Remove Diagnostic Disc Check" by selecting them and pressing A. If you have 4.3, enable "Re-enable Bannerbomb v2". These are very important for brick protection.
6. You can enable more if you want, but keep in mind that too many hacks (especially the Region-Free ones) can cause your system to be unstable. If you hate the System Menu music, feel free to turn that off.
7. When you are done, go to Save Settings (it's at the bottom) and press A.
8. You can change hacks any time you want, but just make sure that you never disable the update blocking ones.
9. If you want to change more settings, go to the "Tweaking Your Settings" section further down.

Congratulations! You have Priiloader setup!

Using cIOS

Requirements

• The Homebrew Channel (any version).

• A patched IOS36 or IOS249. It must have the trucha bug and es identify.

Directions

Explanation of Hacks

Not all of these hacks will show up for you, because some only apply for specific System Menus.

• Re-enable Bannerbomb v2 - Allows the use of Bannerbomb 2 on System Menu 4.3. You would get an error otherwise.
• Block Online Updates - You can run channels that connect to the internet (the Shop Channel, Nintendo Channel, etc.) without being prompted to update.
• Block Disc Updates - You can play discs without being forced to do a System Menu update.
• Skip disc update check - The same as Block Disc Updates. It's just under a different name.
• Region Free EVERYTHING - Allows you to play Wii/GC discs and channels that are outside of your region.
• Region Free GC Games - Allows you to play GC games that are outside of your region.
• Region Free GC Games (No VM Patch) - The same as "Region Free GC Games"
• Region Free Wii Games - Allows you to play Wii games that are outside of your region.
• Region Free Channels - Allows you to play channels that are outside of your region.
• Lock System Menu with Black Screen - It will just load your Wii to a black screen. It's pointless.
• Remove Diagnostic Disc Check - Allows you to auto-boot Wii games through the Recovery Menu.
• Remove diag disc check - The same as "Remove Diagnostic Disc Check"
• No System Menu Sounds AT ALL - Basically the same as muting your TV. No sound will come from the channels (including the Disc Channel) or from clicking/scrolling, and the background music will be gone.
• No System Menu Background Music - A better alternative to the above for most people. Only the background music will be muted, so you can still here the sound when you click on a channel and when scrolling.
• No-Delete HAXX,JODI,DVDX,DISC,DISK,RZDx - Prevents deletion of old versions of the HBC, Twilight Hack (any version), and DVDX. It is unnecessary if you have homebrew up to date.
• Remove NoCopy Save File Protection - A useless hack. You can copy protected save files to your SD card, but you still can't copy them back.
• Force Disc Games to run under IOS249 - Makes discs run under 249 instead of the IOS they are supposed to. It can be helpful if you don't have the required IOS, but should not be used as a permanent fix.
• Auto-Press A at Health Screen - You will see the health screen at startup, but only for a second.
• Replace Health Screen with Backmenu - Same as above, but instead of the health screen, you will simply see a black screen. It will not speed up the boot process.
• Force Standard Recovery Mode - Normally you would have to destroy a GC controller's d-pad to enter Recovery Mode. This will boot straight to it. This is of no use to most people.
• OSReport to UsbGecko(slot B) - Outputs info to a USB Gecko if you have one. For developers only.
• OSReport to UsbGecko(GeckoOS,B) - As far as I know, this is the same thing.
• Move Disc Channel - It allows you to move the Disc Channel just like any other channel (by grabbing with B+A). It also lets you move empty slots, but there is no use to that.

Enabling the Region Free hacks is not recommended as it can cause system instability, and is of no use to most people.

Installing/Loading a .dol

1. Download the .dol for the app of your choice and place it on the root of your sd card. Insert you sd card into the wii.

2. Load Priiloader/Preloader (hold Reset While Booting)

3. Select Load/Install .dol

4. From there you may select from the .dol files on the root of your sd card
a. To Load a .dol select and press 2.
b. To install a .dol select and press A.

You can autoboot a installed .dol on boot up.

quick question. I installed everything but when I choose autoboot: system menu. It'll still start Preloader even if I didn't hold the reset button. Any solutions? At the moment I installed starpatch but I don't know if it's working and don't really want to test it by trying to update. I'm on 4.0u btw.

Yes, once you have the supported system menu, you can safely install Priiloader or Preloader.

I'm a noob and just bricked my first wii (installing wads on a 4.2, no preloader was installed). I am replacing it tomorrow. This time I just want to run a preloader and have it boot to a USB Loader for my USB HD (NOT use the system menu or wads at all).

So.. prior to this guide here I'd be softmodding and installing a HBC using either the guide here (for up to 4.1) or here (if it comes 4.2), right?

After that... if I want Priiloader do I install Preloader first? Thanks!

No, you do not need to install Preloader before installing Priiloader. Just install Prilloader as shown in the tutorials.

Gotcha. What had thrown me off was the directions for installing Priiloader within that zip file. It instructs to "To install additional System Menu patches, simply copy the "hacks.ini" file included with preloader into the root of your SD card." But there is no hacks.ini in that zip file. I see that in your preparation, above, I'll be grabbing a hacks.ini file first. Thanks again.

I have a quick question, first of all i have system menu 4.2U, and in the link you provided with the code to make the hacks.ini file, in the one for my system menu, it doesn't include "Region Free Wii Discs", but it does include it in the one for system menu 4.1, can I use that one, or is it not needed in system menu 4.2?

I believe this is region free for disc channel but since you will probably be using a backup loader, it isn't a big deal. Also 4.1 hacks.ini shouldn't work on 4.2U. You could always enable it yourself in Priiloader. From the priiloader main menu, go to system hacks and enable region free.

Well that's the problem, in the system hacks there isn't even an option to enable or disable region free for Wii games. u_u;
