I tried searching for this but couldnt find anything. I am using a notebook harddrive in an enclosure so I figured I would try and see what happens. I am running 4.1u with a soft modded wii. I set up the HDD and put the usb loader gx app onto the sd card so I can install it. I have the HDD plugged into the bottom usb port and it shows its getting power and I can hear it once the Wii is turned on. I click on the usb loader channel and it comes up a blank screen. It has the background there but nothing is there? Does this mean my HDD is not compatible or did I do something wrong?

Some laptop type USB drives require a lot of power to run, maybe the Wii isn't offering enough power via the USB.

I have managed to get a 350GB external USB powered drive to work though. So it could just be that particular drive.

Does it have a double USB cable to draw extra power from port 2?

yes it does have two usb connectors going out. will both the connections on the wii work or i guess its trial and error. I think I might just got and buy a 320gb WD. Right now i am burning the backups and its not a problem. I am just scared playing the dvds will make the wii over work

Put the main USB in the bottom port, and the other in the top for the added power. Can't hurt it.

If that's no good, i'd go buy a WD. 320GB wont take long to fill.

Works like a charm on a WD My Passport...On a side note I was also able to do this with a PNY usb stick drive.

@Olly- you have cIOS successfully installed, you now have a compatible USB HDD, I presume you followed all the instructions on setting up the HDD and using WBFS Manager. You refer only to one game-do other games work? Have you loaded other game ISOs onto the HDD? If not, please do so, because I just don't see any addressable problem.

By the way, I updated a few of the USB Loader versions, so you might want to redownload and get the new versions.

    Hrmmm

Ok, I've successfully softmodded as per DogEggs tute. ((check))
Next, I came here to configure a usb loader for my external HDD.
I've formatted the drive through the WBFS program for PC. I've placed all other SD files on said card and loaded in Wii (LUH71 4.0u), went to HBC, wad mngr, ran the channel wad for usb gx. Then I exited to HBC and ran the iso loader app. That took me back to wii main menu where there was a fresh iso channel. I click....then start....then blackness.
I've copied two games (mario party 8 rar & mario kart iso) to the wbfs partition and hooked it up (seagate freeagent 500gb, 120gb wii).

Separately, I thought perhaps I'd try the neogamma route. I burned a legal backup of mariokart iso using nero rom, verified the data. I place in wii after boot and it previews where a typical game would....i click and it gives me a game screen. "start!" i say......the wii goes black and gives me "disc error, please eject disc, turn off wii and see manual." "boooooooo" i say.
    Help?

Try running the USB Loader , not as a channel wad, but as a homebrew app through HBC. Some of the newer Wiis have some problem installing loaders as channel wadsm but can run them through HBC. Instead of instaling the .wad version of the loader, copy the boot.dol version, place the folder in the Apps folder and run through HBC.

@trailuser-install the DVD games from the Wii drive, PCs and DVD drives can't read the Wii discs. Instructions are in the guide for USB Loader GX-if you are using a different USB Loader, they install games pretty much the same way.
