If your USB stick setting is such that your PC sees the USB stick as a removeable drive, you will not be able to partition it. There is a tool, Lexar USB Tool that can change that identification bit so that the USB stick looks to your PC like a regular HDD. Then you can partition it to your heart's content. I'm sorry, I don't have access to the Lexar utility, please Google for it-I believe it has been made widely available.

The other option is to reformat the whole flash as FAT32 and give that a try.

I'm using CIOS38 r14 and USB Loader GX.
Not at all common. Usually a frozen black screen means an IOS needed to load the game is missing. For the games to play after reinstall, suggests something is off with either the game IOS or installation or your HDD may not be fully compatible?

As the games are working now, just be careful not to add too many as something is wrong and if it is the HDD, you will be either getting a new one or doing something to it in the future.

Please check the USB device compatibility links provided in this guide. I, however, believe that the Crucial flash drives have not been compatible with the Wii. Check to make sure, though as that is just my memory of the Crucial line.

@jerseywii-thanks. As that is the third time the load question has come up. I will revise the guide to include that point.

Need help loading my hdd to wii using USB loader GX!

I just completed soft-modding my wii using this great tutorial. Thanks to whoever put this together and for explaining how to do something that even dummies like myself can figure out.

I am having problems getting my external hdd to be recognized when I load USB Loader GX. I have followed all of the steps in this tutorial and accomplished installing HBC, extermination of stub ios249, and installation of cios38rev14. I did not see any errors during that process. My problems are with getting the wii to recognize my hdd when I load it with the usb loader gx. I get the error "Waiting on slow usb device" and it counts down from 30 seconds and than the screen goes black and I return to the wii home page. This seems to be a common problem and I think the only problem might be the compatiblity of my hdd since I have done everything else in the tutorial as described. I formatted my hd to NTFS(rather than FAT32 because I was only given the option of exfat or NTFS) and partioned my hard drive and made it primary, and active. I than used WBFS to format the hdd and add iso's to the drive. I have an old 120 gb western digital hdd that I purchased in 2004. I could not find this particular hdd on the list of compatible hdd's for modded wii use. So I think this might be the problem because I have tried everything else and I continue to get the same "waiting on slow usb device". I have checked to make sure that I'm using the correct usb on the back of wii. Before I go out and buy a new hdd I would like to know if anyone has any last minute suggestions/advice that I could use that might help me get this to work?? I'm a total newbie at modding and would appreciate any help.

Some people say it's important to format the drive to fat32 (not NTFS) before formatting with WBFS. Windows 7 only allows me exFAT or NTFS, and I choose NTFS. Does anyone think this could be the problem?

Also, I have tried loading the hdd from Neogamma r7 and it also does not work either.

Thanks for anyone who can help!

Sorry but I am confused on how to properly install the usb loader. I am currently on a 4.1u system and the guide to softmod by installing homebrew worked flawlessly and I can now play my wii games backed up on dvd-r. I went out today and bought a WD My Book Essential 1tb usb drive though because I want to be able to load the games without a disc.

Here is where the confusion kicks in for me. I followed the link in this guide to download the usb_loader_GX_290110.rar file and properly formatted the new HDD partitioned it using the WBSF manager but I haven't found a step-by-step guide on how to move my downloaded files in my "usb loader GX folder". When I click on the folder there are 2 folders ("for PC" and "for sd card"), which files in the "for sd card" tree do I copy to my sd card? If I put them on the root of the sd card wont the "apps" folder and "wad" folder overwrite my existing apps and wad folders being used to run homebrew?

Sorry but I am being very cautious because this is all new to me so any advice on which folders to move over would be great and yes I would like to make usb loader a channel for easier interaction (the less menus the kids have to navigate the better). Thanks in advance!

Thanks ifc4ever for the info. Ok well I did what you said and 26-28 hours later I tried out the cloned HD. It loads up and brings up all the games but when I try to load a game it says something like "error occured" "returned - 1". I dont know what I did wrong so if anyone has any idea please let me know...thanks

The USB Loader GX.wad file will be installed using Wad Manager and will result in USB Loader GX working as a channel.

hard to anticipate everyone's SD card structure-if you already have Apps and Wad folder, please don;t overwrite-just copy the files you want over to your SD card.

boot.dol file needs to be inside a named folder all inside Apps (SD:\Apps\USBLoaderGXrevxxx\boot.dol) and will be run from HBC. .wad files are installed by Wad Mgr (go to HBC, run Wad Mgr, leave it its default settings of IOS249 and SD card slot) find your .wad file and install it).

A special .wad file is the one with the forwarder name-it installs as a channel, but only points to the boot.dol version-this is for safer, easier updating of the loader for some folks.

@hawkeye-it looks most likely that your HDD is nnot compatible. The older versions of WBFS Mgr could not format an NTFS drive/partition, that is no longer an issue so no problems should have been due to that. The slow device issue shows up when the Wii and HDD are not powered on at the right time-by the time you ran USB Loader GX-your HDD might have powered down. This is an issue with old internal HDDs and also with not truly compatible HDDs.

Try plugging it in only after your start up USB Loader GX-if that works, but the games freeze after a few minutes-your HDD is going to sleep/hibernating or something like that. One last try for saving the HDD use iin that case will be if you have a utility disc or the manual has the jumper settings to set sleep/hibernate/powerdown settings to NEVER or to something really delayed.
