How to create multiple partitions on your USB HDD.

In this tutorial I'm going to show you to the best of my ability how to create multiple partitions on your USB HDD so that you may use it with a USB Loader or the WODE.


Programs Needed:
EASEUS Partition Master
WBFSManager


EASEUS Partition Master

WBFS Manager - Release: WBFS Manager 3.0


Instructions:

1. Download the above programs and install them.

2. Get your USB HDD ready. In this example I'll be using my 120GB Seagate HDD but I highly recommend using a Western Digital My Passport Essential as they have high compatability.

3. Plug your HDD into your PC/Laptop and BACKUP any files which you wish to keep.

4. Open up EASEUS Partition Master.

5. Select the drive and choose resize/Move.

6. Now that you have 2 partitions change the drive Letter of the second to the letter above the first partition by right clicking the partiton and selecting Advanced followed by Change Drive Letter.

7. Now that you've set a new Drive Letter for your secondary partition it's time to create your first partiton which should be unallocated. Just select it and choose Create.

8. Now that your first partition is ready it's time to set it to Active. Select the partition, right click, select Advanced followed by Set Active.

9. Now that you've done that it's time to change the format of the second partition. Just select the second partition and choose format and then select FAT32.

10. Now that you've done all that select Apply and wait for it to finish.

Now it's time to format the first partiton to WBFS for use with a USB Loader.

1. Open WBFSManager and select your Drive Letter from the drop down list and then choose format.

2. After you format the HDD click load and it should load the newly formatted drive.

3. Choose Browse and a pop-up box will open, just choose the directory with your ISOs and choose the ones to add.

4. Click Add to Drive and wait for it to finish. Don't open programs while this process is occuring as it can cause errors.

5. You now have your ISOs on your HDD and ready to use.

Just to clarify some things.

USB Loaders:

- Need to have a WBFS partition set to Primary and Active to read and dump Wii games.

The WODE:

- NTFS - Read only, works with Wii and GC ISOs, no ripping.
- WBFS - Same as any USB Loader.
- FAT32 - Read and rip GC ISOs only.
- Ext3FS - Pure ISO dump.
- WiFi/SAMBA - Pure ISO dump.

Thanks for the tips. I went through the entire setup and got 3 isos on my drive, but when I try and use it with the wii the 2 different loaders can't find the drive. Wii flow says error -1 and gx loader says there is no wbfs partition found and ask if I like to create one? Couldn't get by the error so I eventually said yes, but now when I put the drive back into the pc to copy isos over WBFS 3.0 can't see or load the drive?

Any ideas?

I figured it out. I didn't have it set as an active primary. I have a 1tb segate freeagent that I picked up a while ago for $100. Works great, about to get the 1.5tb for $140 on sale. :D It was listed as one of the working drives.

Glad you fixed your problem and I did state that in one of the points you needed to set it to prmary and active.

Wish I had such a good and detail tutorial when partitioned HDD. I spent so much time on that.
Just one thing: if you want to use FAT32 partition instead SD card, that partition need to be set as active, not WBFS! And, of course, all partitions must be primary!
And again, thank you for your efforts!

I'm not sure as I only use the FAT32 partition to keep my Gamecube ISOs but some other members may be able to help you with that.

Yeah I recall reading it, but I created a fat partition AFTER the WBFS one so it became primary causing mine not to work. I then had to go back and designate the WBFS as primary for it to work. :D

It took 9 noob post to make you FINALLY say that so not confuse them ;). All jokes here :D

Hey guys... ok noob question approaching.

I have my wii softmodded (with a wii key) running 4.1US. I have preloader 3.0r3, and bootmi installed as well. I have it set up to boot to USB Loader GX, and have a HDD attached. The hard drive is currently formatted for USB Loader GX, but i am aware how to create a new partition and format that.

So my question is... is there a way to save my .wads, usb loader files, or basically anything I would put on my SD card to the HDD instead? (Im assuming i need to keep the bootmi, and preloader stuff on it) to boot the system correctly. But id like to be able to keep all my games, files, homebrew apps, etc on this drive instead of fussing with SD cards. Ive looked around but can seem to find the answer. I also assuming it depends on the app or homebrew im running, or maybe not and im just making this more confusing.

If you could help Id really appreciate it. Or if there is a guide or tutorial i missed that explains how to set up the HDD to do this and interact with the wii and apps could you point me to it? Thanks!
