My fat32 partition contents look exactly like the sd contents, and all paths are set to usb (covers, etc. are on the hdd)... works great but only if i have and sd card plugged in... Is there another forwarder that targets the hdd?

    thanks
You seem to have done things right.
Did you change the update path to USB
If you are using autoboot from preloader, make sure your .dol is in the path specified.

    NOTE from GX.

The target for the new forwarder is ROOT:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol where ROOT can be ether USB or SD but if you set an update path at the USB Loader GX settings, then that path becomes the target.
ex. if you set as update path SD:/apps/usbloader/ then the loader will check there for boot.dol or boot.elf and not at usbloader_gx

first partition is fat32 and is primary and active...
    my update path is USB:/apps/usbloader_gx/...
    not using preloader to autoboot....

usb loader gx also works great if i start it from hdd thru the hombrew channel (with no sd card plugged in)...

when i try it with the forwarder (and no sd)... wii system just reboots...

It looks like the update path is set incorrectly. Its still looking at the SD card.

Ah well it will do what you want, no good if you want to autoboot to it.

Here are some pros and cons from the Gx site.

First we will start with what is the same:

Covers and disk images are saved at the SD/USB
Changes at settings are saved at the SD/USB
Cheats (ocarina) are saved at the SD/USB

Both are channels taking space at you Wii memory (NAND)
Now here is what is different:

The channel includes the program which is also saved to your Wii memory too
The forwarder is a link to the program (dol/elf) saved at your SD card or at your USB HDD

What are the pros of the channel?

You can play your games without an SD card or a second partition at you USB HDD

It starts around a second faster
What are the disadvantages of the channel?

You can't use the update function that the program has. You have to do it manually. Since r590 the update also works for channels

It takes about 1.8 MB more space at the Wii Memory that the forwarder does.
If you use it without an SD (or a second partition at you USB HDD) you can't save your settings, you don't have covers and disk images and you can't use cheats (ocarina)
You don't have the cool loading screen (see above)

you need to have a fat partition on the hard drive to make it work. Then ensure you have a images directory in that partition and that's where the covers go. Once you have that go into the options of gxloader and set the path to the hard drive parition for the images.

thanks for the quick reply. so i have to name the folder images and place it on the fat partition. do i have to place any files or do anything to the folder. i'm very new to this so excuse any questions that sound dum.

that will work. Also if you doing disc images as well ensure under the images folder should be a disc folder like /images/disc You do not need to populate the folders and just ensure you have internet access and when going into gxloader at the menu use the 1 key on the wiimote. This will allow you to download 3d covers (recommended) and disc images. They are then stored under those directories on the hard drives fat partition. No question is dumb just have a look around if your unsure if your question isn't covered. I'm not sure if this is or not. Oh also look for themes for gx just put on a nice one today. Easier to see the game covers in contrast to the white background.
