Make that you are burning a good working iso on high quality DVD-R (not DVD+R) media at low speeds. Burning at 2.4x on Verbatim DVD-R is recommended.

Researched, now Ready for Guidance!
I've successfully updated from 3.2U to 4.2U.
Previously had CIOS 36 rev9 installed and that didn't run some of my b/u disks
Is it ok to install this cIOS over the previous one?
In other words, can I go ahead and use ShadowSonics guide, as it is or do I have to prep or omit anything.
Or there's a cIOScorp available, too. How does that differ?
Gosh, I feel like a noob all over again.
Trying to do it right the first time.

didn't brick my 4.2 wii...at least not yet!
So I'm a newbie to the hacking world. Have owned my wii for about a year. The main stream games (wii fit, wii resort, etc...) are cool...when you have company. These games were made for interaction but sometimes you just want to play alone or with just one other person. The old school nintendo games do that.
I thought I don't want to pay for this stuff...my parents already paid for it when I was a kid. Just want to enjoy it again...
So I heard around the grapevine that you could download wii games from the internet, put them on a mass storage usb drive, connect that drive to your wii, and play the games off there. Wasn't as easy as it sounded. Next I found out I needed to have homebrew on my wii to play those games off the usb drive. Before I downloaded homebrew I thought, I should update my wii so that I have the lastes update on my wii just in case I can't make any more changes to my wii after the softmod. Updated to 4.2 with no problems! Just wasn't what I should have done. My hacking lifetime would have been over much sooner had I not updated...doh! Three guides, 6 hours of researching little quirks of the 4.2 (wiimote shutting off when I tried to install wad manager), and I finally installed homebrew.
So I open up homebrew and search the games on the browser, but the games I want to play are not there. Where are the mario games? Where is Contra? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Turns out you gotta get these games online. From where? I dont' know. Once I find the files, is there a specific way I should format my hard drive so that my wii will read it? I don't know. Once I have the games on the hard drive, how do I access them from the usb hard drive I have connected to my wii? I don't know.
So now I am in the process of learning how to download games off the internet, put them on a mass usb storage device (I'm using the hard drive from an old laptop that burned out, just bought an enclosure for it for like $15at microcenter), and play them on my wii. Sounds easey but I'll let you know! Wish me luck. If anyone is empathetic to my situation any assistance is appreciated.
!!!Don't upgrade to 4.2 if you intend to hack your wii!!!

worked for me
This guide worked for my virgin 4.2u wii. Haven't figured out how to play downloaded games so don't know if the hack works yet. At least it didn't brick my wii!!!
Will let you know how everything goes after I play some games. Thanks!

I recently found out that I can back up my games for my wii but never done the process before so I looked it up on youtube and was able to get homebrew working on my wii (despite not having a clue what I was doing and after the 4.2 update), however I cannot get any of my games to load. I never had homebrew before the 4.2 update so I'm unsure wether the problems I'm having is from the update itself or comming from not having the right software (keep in mind the fact that I don't even know what software is suppose to or not suppose to be there or how to check). please help.

I haven't attempted the update to 4.2U, but since I do have purchased shop channels, I'd like to be able to access them, but my Wii is already modded. I already received the new version homebrew via wifi download when it checked for the update, but I need a bit of a clearer path from here so I don't screw up my system when I am forced to do the update and that I can restore my cIOSs safely. I use NeoGamma to load all my backup copies. Honestly, I just want to see what steps I need to take from here to get the cIOS back on my system after the update to 4.2U
