I understand. When I start up the Wii normaly, go to the HBC channel and start the wad manager I get a black screen. I get a black screen on all other options in the HBC. Also with priiloader I cannot start HBC, also not hackmii.
I think I made a big mistake. The last thing I did was installing backuplauncher 03gamma.wad and ISO36.wad in order to try the backuplauncher.

If not, there is other software that could be utilized if you want to stay on that version and those are mentioned in this as well. If it's fully softmodded, why do you want to "do it again," lacking IOS? You could always install those...

Tbh Im not sure what Im doing when I installed the channels I followed and idiots guide that came with the files to put on an sd card, NSMB doesnt work nor call of duty modern, so I was under the impression I required a rev 14 CIOS (not that I know what it is lol) Im not sure exactly what is needed/recommended for a comprehensive console, I think neogamma is required but really am a n00b, not bothered about what version 3.4-4.1 I jusr dream of aWII thats actually plays games from disc haha

Thanks Wii, Genius's! A few humble questions..

First off, Thanks for all your help and support! I know you get lots of 'thanks' initial posts, but it's deserved and I appreciate the accessibility and expertise.

Ok I'm about to mod my Wii. I got it for my family and want to be able to use an external HD mainly for the speed. I'm a PC guy and these loading times/'take all day hints' are driving me nuts, and I'm sure will drive my son even more crazy. I'm hoping I can rip them to the drive and run from there.

Here's my 'stats' for the following questions.

    Wii
    S/N: LU71xxx.
    Menu: 4.0U
    SD Card: Kingston SD/2G
Hard Drive: Several to try, most WD with good 'stats'. i.e 8m+Cache, 7200rpm etc.
Wireless Internet Connection w/ WEP enabled.

    Here's my questions:

    1. Will running my ripped games from the USB connection & HD speed up the loading/response times across the board? For instance I have Sports Resort and the constant 'tutorials' and choosing of avatars and loading between games simply takes too long for me. Maybe I'm just used to the PC, but I'd like to make sure it's faster as this is the main reason I wanna do this. I think there's lots of 'quicker' hacks in the priiloader too, correct? Don't get me wrong, I wanna mod just for options and playing around too, I couldn't live without Rockbox or DD WRT.

    2. Is there any pitfalls you guys know that's specific to system menu 4.0U? I'm fairly confident doing stuff like this, I read and reread the instructions and just wanna extra umph of "it'll be fine', specifically to my configuration.

    3. My wireless connection is up, but I've never enabled WiiConnect24, haven't even accepted the agreement. Is this fine? I'm asking since I know we need an internet connection to do the mod and it states to turn Wiiconnect24 off, but will there be a problem if its never even been activated? Obviously I can't look at the default weather or news channel, so I can't 'test' it properly. Should I enable WiiConnect24 then disable it?

    4. I'm assuming I'll get Bootmii into boot2. But if I have put Bootmii in on the IOS is there a greater risk of recovery problems if something unforeseen happens?

    5. I have no need to create backup DVD's, I only want to use the USB Harddrive. Is there anything I should'nt do or load?

    6. Is there any reason not to install priiloader?

    7. I'm on 4.0U. Is there any reason NOT to upgrade to 4.1?

    7. Step 5a says "If you are on system menu 4/4.1 use Wad Manager with default settings (IOS249 & SD card) to install IOS60-patched.wad - make sure you do this before you install Priiloader. If you installed it in step 4 then skip this part. Never uninstall IOS60!". So I assume I can update to 4.1 if I have 250+ blocks free, and when I update it will have automatically installed 10s60-patched.wad?

    and

If I do not update to 4.1, how hard is it to use the wad manager to install IOS60-patched.wad? I'm assuming I do the same as Step 5D but choose IOS60-patched.wad? I only ask because this is obviously new to me, and these steps seem very specific but there's no info on how to use the wad manager for that IOS60-patched.wad update.

I know I wrote a bunch of questions, but tried to give as much info as possible and make them easy to answer.

Appreciate the time fellas, looking forward to trying this!

You get a chance and have some suggestions, feel free to chime in. I don't exactly know how to have pgee get his _hit together on this one.

Step 3D is about that, but best to either start from right after the HBC installation on this guide or to virginize you Wii again (search and you'll find a match).

    1. This softmod limits the DVD spin on backups to 3X; originals still run full 6X. Do the math, HD will be faster loading times presuming decent HD and that seems to be the case.

    2. Nothing wrong with System 4.0; no real reason to update to 4.1 --- definitely do NOT update to 4.2, harder to do (Nintendo did just to kill homebrew/backups)

    3. I ran this Tutorial on a 4.1U and did not need an internet connection; if you're fine with 4.0 then you don't need it either. Do not leave or turn on Wiconnect24 and forget to turn it off should it be required (shouldn't be required).

    4. You will get BootMii installed as an IOS, not Boot2. Boot2 generally cannot be overwritten re: bricks, but installed as an IOS it can get written over and hence less bulletproof than Boot2. It will either say you can or can't --- there's no way to force it, hardware/bug exploit that got corrected on later Wiis.

    5. DVDx is optional AFAIK; if you don't plan on running DVD movie backups, not required per se (still a good idea).

    6. Priiloader installation is meant as brick protection; some versions cause our users problems (like won't boot into System Menu). This can be corrected or fixed if proves the case for you. Also there are variants like Preloader v.30R4 and the like that are viable alternatives if your Wii doesn't like the current one included within the softmod files.

    7. Yes on space, must have that availability. On the IOS60 you must manually install via Wad Manager prior to making the update. Yes on 2nd part of your question, though if memory serves you may have to "navigate" to the proper loc via wad manager's interface.

You sure only a "few" questions?

Look at your wii serial #. If it's LU64+ DO NOT do the virgin guide. It says that right at the beginning... Just throwing that out there.

Ok I'm up to to Step 2. I go to the homebrew channel, hit HOME then choose bootmii. It then seemly locks up on the next screen (with the 4 icons, WII, HomebrewChannel, SD, and Options).

What should be my next move? I cannot arrow over or anything, have to reset. Could this be because I don't have the internet Wiiconnect24 on?

NM found it - Now I know what the navigate the menu with eject means.
