I've downloaded it and it seems to be smaller than I was expecting, not have the same filename I was expecting (I though it would be Wii_Softmod_PAL 031110.rar but it seems to be Wii_Softmod_140410.rar) and when I looked inside it but there is nothing to indicate which region it applies to.

    Any pointers or suggestions appreciated!

There's Wani's "safe firmware updater" that you'd find in the /apps folder. So if you need to update to 4.1 (requires internet connection), it would update your Wii to the proper region. If you're @ 3.2 or 4.0 and want to stay there, then you could skip that part and it'd also be a non-issue by extension.

You can use bannerbomb v1, which doesn't require any games.
So are you saying i also need to download bannerbomb before i can use the softmod software. SORRY about these silly questions but like u say i'm old school only now getting back into the wii.

The softmod download for this tutorial provides all the apps and wads needed to follow the tutorial.

I have done everything in this guide, with no progress. I also followed the other guide on http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...d-any-wii.html
Now I can play a copy of Mario kart, but other games that i copied do still not work. I cant figure out whats wrong.
When trying to start NeoGamma from system menu the wii just restarts.

When going into priiloader and choosing "Installed file" i get "Error autobooting file, try reinstalling! Could not open file!"

I've tried everyhting, could someone please tell me what might be wrong? Why does mario kart work but not other games?

The channel is a forwarder. So yes, it is "bcoz" you don't have NeoGamma on your SD card.

Hey everyone...complete newbie here...but I have successfully completed this guide to softmod my wii. I have a launch era (LU50) that was at 4.1U...so the only step I wondered about was step 4 about "updating" to 4.1 since I was already there. But I completed it anyway and everything seems to have worked fine.

Now I'm moving on and looking at the guides on setting up USB drives. Specifically the guide on using FAT32 only mentions some other cIOS files that should be present (Hermes 222, 223, cIOSx 19 or 20). So I want to add those files without messing up anything I've already done!

So, is it possible, or correct, to simply add the .wad files for these versions to the wad directory on my SD card and then run WAD manager?

Edit: I've gone ahead and followed the info here to install Hermes 222, 223.

Also, here is what syscheck currently returns for me. If everything looks ok, next step is to begin backing up one of my discs to USB hard drive.

    Spoiler

Well I think I've sorted it out.
There are two kinds of NeoGamma as I understand, one is just a wad file, that when installed will show up as channel i system menu. The other one was a zip archive that i downloaded, and put neogamma folder under apps in the SD card. Now I can start NeoGamma from the Homebrew channel, but still not directly from the System menu.
Now all backups run great! However there's still one question, I would like to play my gamecube backups as well, and I found this guide http://www.wiihacks.com/other-faq-gu...-your-wii.html
Can i follow this guide and still be able to play the wii backups?

vinatec's regular posting of links includes a pal system menu version of 4.5. This guide (in step 4) indicates we need to upgrade to 4.1 - is it safe to upgrade (via the wad manager) to 4.5?
