If I'm reading your query correctly, yes. You're saying you have a partially functioning drive in that the system detects it, however it won't actually play games --- yes? Of course, there may be other things to account for this behavior ---- cIOSFail/DarkFail, D3-2/D4 drive (if backups only; originals if they do this as well, then this is not the case), a dirty lens.

I had a soft-modded wii at 3.4 and decided to update and I'm on 4.1 with soft mod capabilities but somewhere along the way, I messed up. Is it okay to follow this guide as if I was trying to soft-mod a wii from the beginning? I don't know where I went wrong so I hope it's okay to start over completely, even if that does mean I'll end up re-installing some things.

Well I find myself in need of advice again. I fixed the problem I was with USBloader cfg by changing the default IOS to anything other than 250. I also backed up my usb drive and reformatted it (WBFS). I used wii backup manager to reinstall my games but now if I have my drive plugged in and turned on when my wii boots it locks up. If I wait till it is at the home screen then turn on the HDD I have no problems. Any ideas?

Not a valid question for this guide. I suggest you ask in the newbie section.

Yes you can. Check out Mauifrogs softmod any Wii guide for another option.

Novice at modding
I am complete novice at doing this sort of thing. Honestly i am surprised i have not bricked my system already. FirmWare is 3.2U using homebrew. there is 5 different loaders on my menu now. i have found that i cant load any new released games from the last 6 months.
I would like to clear up the menu as well as put the newest softmod onto my system. I am a total novice to doing all of this. if someone could please help me even if its just a link to a page that will help.

Just wondering has anyone tried using a 1GB sandisk card and got results, as this is the one i have, or does it have to be 2GB.

Before I ask my question, I just wanna say thanks for the guide. Hopefully I can donate once I get a new job.
So, here's the thing. My current Wii system is 4.1 and everything went smoothly (though bootmii didnt auto load even though I install it as boot2 but I installed it as ISO anyways). Now I am on step 3 "GET A CIOS" and I was reading the instructions on the screen. It said to skip IOS15 downgrade if not needed, for system menu <3.3
So should I skip that and move on to step 2 and it should be fine? Or just downgrade it anyways? ;x
EDIT: Nevermind. Totally thought it said GREATER than 3.3. But I see you replied already so thanks. Yes, I shall introduce myself there.

Folks with 3.1-3.2 Wiis skip Steps 3A-3C. Your Wii is 4.1; you do all of Step 3. Your last sentence doesn't even make sense --- you speak of skipping Step 3, and then ask if you should move on to Step 2. Having a minor math/chronological order issue, are we?
You really ought to make a quick "hello" in the Introductions section of the site; you'll get a personal greeting by a staff member along with excellent starter links.
