quick question, i just got my new wii yesterday, it came with 3.4U installed, so i know i have to update (none optional) while doing this process, should or do i have to update all the way to 4.2U since is the latest, or will it give me the option to go all the way until 4.1U? Also i can see that the only way i will kno which drive version i have is to open it up, but i also did the website drive check, it comes up with 50% chance, i guess i will have to just burn some DVDs and see what happens? and lastly, any game below 1GB, how can i install them on to a DVD, or can i use a USB loader? i mean i kinda prefer having an USB HDD, i can still use it, correct?

One thing, i noticed, there is no more need for Twilight? i though you had to have it to be able to hack it

    Exclamation read

    Dear friend,
i strongly recomend you to read the forum "newbie discussions" BEFORE you do anything.
DO NOT EVER upgrade your system direct from nitendo.
There are some tutorials in the forum above that guides you in the upgrade.
    Read everythng about Waninkoko.
Just reading you will learn. And you need this.

@ mgusmao, i will admit that i appreciate the respect you showed me. I have being reading all threads and all very understandable, just had some same questions to make sure that i understand them. In regards to the upgrade thanks for clarifying with me atleast that, cuz trust me i would have done so. But i found the link for those updates so thats a good think. Once again thank you. i am still reading. If i could place a pic of my desktop so you can see all the tabs i have open on regards to this website and all i am reading you will see. i am not here to be lazy and bother, but still we were all newbies at one point and we all had questions, so is just fair that there are still newbies and still have questions no matter if the question was already answer. For some reason there is a bit of more reassuring when one asks and then is re answer, which is what i do when it comes to my other forums for computer build and repairs. I will keep reading

If you follow this thread, Step 4 will safely update you to 4.1; as another poster stated, never accept an update from Nintendo. 4.2 was introduced solely to kill homebrew. There's an excellent guide for USB HD gaming here and USB device compatibility threads here and here. Twilight hack is no longer necessary; this tutorial uses banner bomb.

Your wii is older version so you have the drive that reads discs.
just follow the guide step by step and you will have softmodded your wii.It will tell you how and what to update to.Yes you can use usb loader.Just slowly and carfully. Most of all ENJOY it

honestly i have to say this, i read the rules, and you guys do follow it to the T. I mean very mature and respectful. Thank you. I am still reading and i will let you guys know once i get it done. BTW when it comes to small games, like Wii sports, n others which are about 1GB can they be install in a DVD and still run like a normal game, thats my main priority, and as i said i will try to aim for USB HDD i have a 500GB and it will be less space than making a bunch of DVDs and maybe faster loading and easier game caching?

If you mean via USB, you will frequently find actual content is far less than the disc image size. If you're speaking of DVDs, you still need full disc size --- 4.37gb (even though not all of that is going to be used; there's no way to put multiple games on a Wii disc to my knowledge --- tho there is a way for this to happen on GC games). You can even use USB thumb drives/SD cards as an alternative... there are threads on how so. I use a WB 500gb HD as primary method to do my Wii thing and it's quite faster, convenient, and less chaotic if you have kids like we do.
