It appears to install fine with both versions but when i exit the installer it black screens and freezes when i resatrt the wii the channel is there but when i open it and press start it freezes. It is exactly the same with both methods.

I have a 1 month old wii on 4.1E. I've been trying to softmod it for days now without success ( i've done a few before). I've tried a few differrent methods and have ended up formatting the wii system memory a couple times and starting again. I then found this tutorial which looks great with excellent thorough instructions. Unfortunately I cant even get started as once I install HBC it just freezes, I then re-start the wii and HBC is on the system menu but when I go into it and press start it just freezes. I've now uninstalled & re-installed HBC 4 times and its the same every time.

Any help would really be apprecciated.
First post? But it says two posts, I see

Seriously a few things here. First off, a "format" doesn't do anything except erase save game data. Anything else, and it's still there. Secondly, you mentioned you have tried a "few different" methods. Most likely you've monkeyed with the system internals; this can range from a stray but necessary IOS all the way to "gutting it" with say cIOSCorp. Here's the problem: there's a "virginizing your Wii" thread here; the problem is your Wii is recent and you should read the warnings, as there's brick potential there.

We have no idea what mods you've attempted; it certainly sounds like more than one. This is always it's recommended not to mix and match mods. You can't simply say mod A doesn't work after making alterations and then attempting mod B without expecting problems, complications, or potential bricking. The recommendation is always go with the mod you started and seek assistance from that group, writer, or maintainer. Failing that, there's the virginizing your Wii thread previously mentioned. Many of us simply wouldn't even know where to start in terms of providing actual, constructive guidance in restoring your Wii. This particular mod or tutorial is considered one of the least invasive mods out there; the closer you keep your Wii to spec, the better for obvious reasons.

You can feel free to read the linked thread. Beyond that seek help from the originator of the mod(s) you've attempted. The only other option is if you know exactly what you've done to this particular unit; in such a case, post back with full details and leave nothing out. Hope this helps, we'd rather you do it "our way" than someone else's hackneyed idea. Good luck.

Edit: sorry Gen3SF, I was composing this and it took longer than I initially thought... couple that with giving my 7 year old a bath and it put me behind.

    Overshot and Nitro:

Gen3SF gave you quickie advice, and good it is. That being said, allowances are made for anyone who would need more "handholding" on a 3.1 to 4.0 and then 4.0 to 4.1 mod. For those who need more "line by line" instruction, please see this post. That's only if you feel like a fish out of water.

    Hi nightstah,
Many thanks for your input I totally agree with you on mixing your mods which is why I should have mentioned that I did "virginise my wii" before attempting this mod. Before virginising I had a fully working homebrew channel installed and working.

    Stonewall:

You can directly upgrade from 3.1 to 4.1, but this is actively discouraged. Doing a wad install of System Menu 4.1 will get you there, however some of the IOS that are downloaded and added via internet connection won't be there. And some of those you will need, and probably get black screens, etc without. That's why it's strongly encouraged to do the internet update to actually get a full update, IOS and System Menu.

If you insist, I'm sure a link could be rounded up, but just make sure you understand the difference as outlined above.

So something's amiss alright... Gen3SF is the most knowledgable person who frequents this thread. There are others who know more, but stop in less. She's the go-to on this, so definitely heed her advice and good luck --- I hope you get it straightened out and properly modded. Let us know.

PS: you know what... you're getting a "thanks" on being smart enough before posting to actually do the virginizing thread [newb in posting but at least not a full babe in the woods, heh]

    Hi,

I've been reading this over and over again. What do you mean when you said directly upgrade is actively discouraged? does this mean if I'm on 3.1, then I have to upgrade 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and so forth until I reach 4.1(using waninkoko's)? I never actually did this to my wii since I updated via nintendo last 4.1 days. But since I will be doing this to my cus who has a 3.2J I'm a little confused.

Thanks very much for all the info in this thread. Performed a 3.4E install with little trouble. Great instructions. USBLoader GX works great.

Only 1 little minor problem I have, and it's not such a big issue, but when I power on the Wii using the power button, light goes green as if to start then goes red again and doesnt turn on. I then press it again and it turns on fine.

Without going through 1052 pages of this post, and sorry if this has been answered many times before, but search didnt find it anywhere.

Is this a known issue and can it be fixed??
