the erronous updating happened before i started the tutorial. Its what i thought was the cause, though this i guess may not be the cause given that i only attempted to access settings after i updated.

preloader, bootmii have now installed fine. I do get the upside down homebrew issue though.

i should be on e/pal. I believe im on U/US as anyregionchanger reports mismatching region.

preloader shows im on IOS v50, and systemmenu v385.

ive tried to install the correct system menu wad using the link on tht tutorial, however the closest thing i could find for E/PAL was 386.

I tried to install that through wad manager, but get an error = 1022

i didnt get a nand backup previously as i was foolish enough to assume that the chip would cover me.....lesson learnt.

My thinking is that all i need to do is get back on the E/PAL system menu, and i should be ok to proceed from there.....getting to that stage is another thing.....please help!

Yeah it does take a while. Updating from 3.1 to 4.0 took 22 minutes this morning and from 4.0 to 4.1, about 7 minutes.

chears dusk86, i get what you posted and the method but im unsure if i need to install anything else. i keep reading about cios 222 and them somt other guides mention other csios. would be nice to have a guide thats linked with this softmod guide so that its clear which files we have and which ones we still need to install a usb loader. appologies if its obvious to others by the way!!

@JasonTell-a scrubbed version of a game ISO should still be an ISO. You did extract the ISO from its rar archival format, yes? If so, the file extension should be ISO. If the extension is ciso-use ncWBFSTools or WBFS Intelligent GUI to install to the WBFS HDD-you can extract the ISO back to your PC if you want an ISO. Any other extension will require another program to install the game image file and questions should be posted elsewhere. This forum thread is for softmodding. Good luck.

@Wii001 - it seems that you have had multiple attempts at restoring the Trucha Bug and installing the cIOS. That error can mean several things. It can mean that one of your previous attempts to restore the Trucha Bug was successful; in that case proceed to Step 3D. After installing running cIOS38rev14installer from the Homebrew Chanel, run Wad Manager and if the defaults displayed are IOS249 and SD card slot, then you may proceed. If not, then a faulty cIOS may be occupying the IOS249 slot and refusing to behave itself. Download AnyTitleDeleter and delete IOS249; be very careful with AnyTitleDeleter-ONLY delete IOS249. Now repeat Step 3.

I searched around and found I needed to download and use the trucha bug restorer so thats where I started this tutorial. I ran trucha, then installed the cios. My hbc flipped (which is no big deal and already fixed), but now I can't get anything to boot (besides the hbc) I just get the black screen freeze with wiimote shutoff. I just need help figuring out how to tell what I need to do to fix it. I can still play orig games and hbc is ok as long as I don't try to use any WADs. In a last ditch effort I uninstalled my wad manager 1.3, but sadly could not install a new one(freezing black screen). I have been reading a lot of forums on this site but could not find a fix for my system. I even tried the brick fix to no luck. my wii is a 3.4u version.

What I would like is to find out just what I did to my Wii so I can find out what to change, Is there any diagnostics program or status page so I can potentially see where I went wrong or what didnt install properly?

I didn't install IOS60 yet or priiloader, but could I have installed something that needed IOS60 and partially bricked my system. Im not sure If I should or am allowed to post the other site that didn't work, lets just say it was the instructables site and the usb loader tutorial on there.

Any help would be much appreciated as I have been trying a bunch of suggestions posted in this and other guides, but keep getting stopped by the freezes. I am reasonably competent, but it seems something may have been lost in translation between the two guides.
Insufficient information. If the other tutorial you followed was to softmod your Wii and allow play from an external USB HDD, then TBR would have been part of your process-there are just different ways and packages to accomplish the same goal.

That is why it is best not to mix and match tutorials. I suggest you return to your original tutorial site, any current and reputable site will support their tutorial. They will know best what their downloads accomplished and where the problems are most likely to occur and what those failures look like. Good luck.

How to update the firmware to 4.1? if i am using 3.4e, do i need to select any options while updating to 4.1 (ex:4.1e)?

    Thanks in advance
@narender - to perform Step 4 - updating your 3.4 E to 4.1E, your Wii should have access to the Internet. Keep WiiConnect24 OFF, as recommended earlier in the tutorial. Internet ON; WiiConnect24 OFF. Go to HBC, run Wad Manager, leave it at the default settings of IOS249 and SD card slot. Select the line that reads WAD, the Wad folder opens and now select and install IOS60patched. Return to Homebrew Channel and run FW4.1updater-the updater will access the internet download what it needs and then install the downloaded files. Now proceed to Tutorial Step 5B.

So, let's have you follow these tutorial steps EXACTLY as written, watch for screen errors and report them before continuing, please.

Get your SD card ready-SD, not SDHC, not a mini or micro with an adaptor, no larger than 2GB no smaller than 1GB. Best is a SanDisk 2GB SD. We are not going to use the Format Tool for the moment. I want you to format your SD card in the FAT32 format from your PC, use the full format option, not the Quick format, OK? Download the softmod pack using either the primary or mirror link in this tutorial. Use WinRar to extract the folder. Copy the folder contents, not the folder itself, to your SD card.

You will not need Internet as you already updated to 4.1U. Make sure that WiiConnect24 is OFF to avoid any further problems, though.

Try Step 1, skip the HBC installation you already have it-do try to install bootmii. Try and do Step 2. If you can't, go on to Step 3-exactly as written-watch the screen for any messages.

If STep 3 seems to go alright, go to HBC, run Wad Manager-you should see the defaults as IOS249 and SD card slot. If so, select the line that reads WAD, select and install IOS60patched-it will overwrite your current unpatched IOS60.

Still alright? I'm going to skip priiloader for now. Skip down to Step 5D and use Wad Mgr to install all those wads.

Post back and let me know how you are doing-did bootmii install and how, what steps did not work and what screen messages or error codes you saw.
Hi gen3sf. Thanks for the reply. I installed bootmii (as ios) and did a nand backup a few days ago after I attempted the ios35 downgrade. That would be the smartest thing I've done. Just to clarify, you said "You will not need Internet as you already updated to 4.1U". The wii had 4.1 originally. Would it still be 4.1 even though NSMB wants to update? I'm trying to get the courage up to follow your advice but, as I had said it's a young friends wii and it still is partially functioning (playing older games), and that is better than a brick. But I will have to do something. I will be back to post how things are going. Thanks very much for your time.

The process should generally take no more than 30 minutes and the files should progress from being downloaded and then installed. If the screen just sits there for more than 20 minutes stuck on a step, your wireless signal probably dropped a bit. Try this step as written a few times, please. If it just keeps freezing on you then you can do an offline update of the system menu-more limited update, but enough to keep you going through the tutorial.

If after 3 or 4 times, it keeps stalling-download the sysmenu 4.1U from HERE. You mentioned 4.1U so your Wii is NTSC or Northa American, yes? If not, post back for 4.1E sysmenu. Extractthe wad file using WinRar and copy to your SD card, INstall the systemmenu using Wad Mgr-I presume you already installed IOS60patched. After installing both IOS60patched and sysmenu4.1U, you can continue to STep 5B.

@Michael - Try reinstalling HBC-it might not have installed correctly for you.

@lms-either a search or looking through the tutorials might have helped you out. To get your USB HDD set up try this guide HERE.
