Write speeds are determined by a couple of factors. The primary one is the write strategy employed by the writer; this is based on the mediacode of a given disc you insert into it. So Brand-X may give that, Brand-Y may say 2x, 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x --- like that. Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Ritek G05 are recommended media to use --- higher quality media and with excellent longevity. DVD-R over DVD+R (technically it'd work in a pinch, but -R if at all possible).

How new is your Wii? If less than a year old, high probability of D3-2 drive and it'd not allow for backups to be ran from the DVD drive. There's always the USB HD gaming option --- look here.

Apologies if this has been covered, I read up to page 14 and my eyes were getting sore
I have ordered a new Drivekey, and some Verbatim DVD-R's. I cannot do anything with my Wii at the moment, as it is 2nd hand and there are no controllers. I have asked elsewhere on this forum, but I just thought I would double-check here:

I have been told not to update to 4.2, because it disables support for out-of-region backups. I read on this thread that you can 'swap' the update on an ISO file. If I got a backup of a game (say Monster Hunter Tri - it's the reason I got a Wii ), could I swap the update on the ISO with the 4.1 update, then let it run, thus updating the Wii to the latest 'safe' version, and from then on block all future updates (using Drivekey and BrickBlocker)? Would this save me from having to bugger about with softmodding?

Also, does not updating hamper my online play? Can I still play with thers online no matter what version my Wii is?

Edit: I checked online, an there is a 50% chance my Wii is a D2C version, if that matters at all.

I just ran out of dvd -r. All i have left is +r. Is there any way i can get +r to work until i get some more. The usb i have is 2gb which is not big enough. Or how can i see how big a game is before i get it. Is there a list of games and sizes.

i have made the +r work b4 But it is way better to use -r go to wiiisos.com and look at the file contents it will tell you how large the file is and if you use the wbfs manager it tells you to the right of the game description

Unhappy ImgBurn not finding wii disc

When I put a wii disc into my dvd drive and run ImgBurn, the software says "Device not ready (Incompatible medium installed)".

My DVD drive is PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17LF

I have successfully made discs from downloaded .ISOs, and I am trying to make a backup copy of one of my discs.

A normal DVD burner on a PC ain't gonna be able to read the Wii's file system, guy. Do you have USB HD? If so you could install it to HD and then use WBFS Manager to extract the image back (images burn just fine on the PC; it's not an issue of write, but one of read).
